Everyone is just slightly off their A game those first few X-Men issues, which isn't a surprise given what was going on in the background with Claremont departing and the formation of Image.
The last real proper X-Men issues are the trip to Shiar space that precede Muir Island.
And the next decade isn't all bad. Age of Apocalypse. The Joe Mad run.

I side with Burns - X-Men 1-3 is a fine coda to the Claremont run and really should have been the last Magneto story for a looong time.

I entirely agree. I may have owned those issues multiple times. Such a shame about the dross that followed.

I have met one person who holds Ralph's view on Age of Apocalypse and that is Ralph.
Mind you I will admit my own view on X-Men 1-3 is also not held be many!

Atlantis Attacks: I have the set here. I recall the WCA annual being good (Byrne) and the X-Factor annual having some Byrne art..... And possibly the Sub-Mariner dying/coming back in the Iron Man annual.....
But apart from that.....
Is that the year with the really Pish X-Men annual?

Back then there was a run of tip top annuals, from about 9-14. Mostly Art Adams art, though there's an Alan Davis drawn one too. And in there, towards the end of X-Men in Australia, there is a real stinker. 13 iirc.
9 is Asgardian Wars 10 is Mojo 11 is The Horde (Davis) 12 is Evoloutionary War vs Terminus in the Savage Land 13 is the dodgy one 14 is Days of Future Present 15 is also dodgy and only has Muir Island X-Men in. Kings of Pain 16 is I think some Mojo related crossover .....

My digital reading has taken me to The X-Men. Started with GS1, got up to 141 so far. Nothing really to counter previous opinions. It does start slowly: the Sentinels story in the run up to 100 is the first good one and it only really gets going when Byrne comes onboard. Forgotten how much I liked the X-Men's visit to Japan in 118-119.
Now just getting to the bits I want to read, the post Byrne issues which I havn't read in a long long time bar 144 which I had a sudden desire to read the other month.
Odd reading in digital issues rather than trades as I have to keep getting the next issue up rather than continue reading. Regretting not bagging those Masterworks digitally the other week. Ah well, next sale. Oddly having to um and ah about buying them is the main reason I was led to rereading the issues that were within.
I'll definitely go to 176, the end of Ashes to Ashes and my first US issue, but I'd like to keep going and do the whole JRjr run as that's "my" X-Men, the issues which were on the shelf when I was starting to get interested in buying comics and the ones I tracked down as back issues at comic marts in the 80s.

Exciting news about Wolverine. He's getting new powers. Apparently when he pops his claws now sometimes they can heat up as well.

I do agree with this one though.
If they are doing a back to basics approach, it makes sense to bring back Uncanny.
Will be interested to see who is on board both for the creative team and who will make up the X-Men in the book.

Not sure about the shenanigans I've heard from this week's comics.
