The rest of the Aerialbots all have arms that hang under the wings in jet mode, it looks as though they do tuck in to varying degrees, but it looks pretty half hearted. On a scout toy it's not unusual, but for deluxes it is. It doesnt bother me, given the size of the combiner joint theres not much choice, but I do wish they could tuck in somewhere when Combined. That was part of what I meant when I was talking about Skydive being Cube Shaped earlier on. Having nowhere for the arms to fold away to, and those very flat sides to the humanoid modes, it means that they are very blocky, far more so than the "The Transformers" Aerialbots. Firefly gets away with it because it keeps a lot of the F-4 aesthetic and, although not slab-sided, the F-4 is a fairly brutalist piece of design from the "technically I am aerodynamic, but I put my faith in the "enough thrust" rule" whereas Skydive retains so many F-16 design features that the squareness just looks wrong to me. (I have a bit of an allergy to arms that go nowhere in the fighter mode - I can accept it in Cyberverse scale toys but in anything larger it has the feel of "we couldn't be bothered/can't afford it" Karl

Also, on topic, the aerialbots look really rubbish. Especially silverbolt. I might only pick up not-slingshot, and dragstrip.

That packaging is a thing of beauty. And an infinite number of steps above the knock-off/Hasbro value-style decos for the AoE packaging...

They should have put the AoE generations in a similar packaging, to distinguish them from the kiddie stuff. Called them premium format, or something. There are dozens of reasons AoE failed, but I can't help but believe packaging was a big reason.

Lots of people still saying this isn't the US packaging and that the US will get comics
Which comics? Combiner Wars hasn't started yet in IDW! all the other toy sizes this coming year have got cards with them so it makes sense that the deluxe would too.

Anyway, seeing that Silverbolt, Bombshell & Powerglide are not available to preorder from Kapow anymore I've cancelled a few book and dvd pre orders and ordered sets of the Legends, Deluxe and Voyager wave 1's from Robotkingdom. £171.41, due mid December

The Protectobots have never been my favourite combiner team. But the fact that Hasbro are expanding beyond the Aerialbots and Stunticons is indeed exciting. More please!

If we get the Combaticons next we'll have all the moulds needed for the Technobots.
I'm very happy about the Protectobots, but curious about who and what Rook will be.
Could be a Jeep to be used for Swindle. Though Offroad might already be intended for that.
Rook = bird = Flying Transformer, but theres already blades.
Rook = Castle chess piece = armoured thing like tank which isn't screaming protectobot, but given what American Police departments are spending anti terrorism money on who knows.

Remoulded Brawl for Nosecone (or Rook if some kind of armoured vehicle) and heavily remoulded Silverbolt for Scattershot.
Of course a legends class Groove means afterburner is either a legends so they'd need a sixth member or is a new mould.

The vehicle which Galaxy Force Exigeyser is based on is a recent version of a long line of similar vehicles which have been in service with American Police Department armed response and riot control units since at least the late 1970's. (The thing that the LAPD use to try and take down the doors of Nakatomi Plaza in "Die Hard" is one of its ancestors). So it isn't beyond the bounds of possibility. Karl

Granted a toy would have been in developement long ago, but given recent developements, a military police vehicle would be horribly poor taste ATM

Rook is an odd name. So most notably from that you've either got Jhiaxus' sidekick who was a spaceship of sorts in Regeneration One, or the grey Windcharger repaint, or the Armada minicon.
None of which says Protectobot. It'll be a repaint then to negate the need to make a deluxe mould for Groove. If Groove is going to be a new Legend then that'll keep his vehicle more in scale with the deluxes. Sensible move.

I suppose it could be a plane, fire and rescue repaint or remould of an aerialbot.

The more I look at the Combiner Wars toys the more I think they look a wee bit pump but could be great fun in person. A lot will depend on how cheap or not cheap they feel in hand and how robust the build quality is. I think it has the potential to be a splendid line of kids toys! It's also nice to see something different being done with an Optimus toy/character.

I've RobotKingdomed and EMSed the first wave and hope to have them in hand by Christmas so I'll let you know.
There's certainly a play element to this line which has been missing from the main Transformers range since Cybertron.
In a weird way, as much as I've enjoyed years of remakes I'd like a main Transformers line, done in the standard TF design style (ie not Movie, Animated or Prime) that does new stuff like RID and the Unicron Trilogy did and keep the remakes as occasional homages.

I'll third that motion. It is why I've not necessarily felt that engages with this years Generations line. They look fine in pictures, but feel like nostalgia toys rather than anything developing in new directions.

I don't think that's weird at all. That's exactly what I'd like to see. New toys in the traditional style. How long has it been since there's been a mainstream retail release of a new character in the toylines descendant from G1? That continuity has become locked in recycling itself, and even the newer lines like Prime rely heavily on reinventing existing characters. It would be awesome to have a year where IDW & Generations took the plunge and gave us a couple of new leaders and an offshoot story arc from the main continuity. I know fundamentally that isn't what the Generations line is for, but it's the only outlet now for new G1 descended characters. Problem is Hasbro is now very heavily into rebooting the narrative every few years and giving us new versions of the same characters because they're recognisable and easy sells. To have a comic (no chance of a cartoon I know) launch that was parallel to MTMTE/ RID Transformers that had new names and toys to go with would be gold. I agree with what you say Phil about part of the Combiner Wars excitement being about new play patterns - there's a point to these toys. I also think a big part of the appeal for me is that these are teams, sets, groups to collect and not one off unrelated individual figures like most of the T30 line. Again, T30 wasn't about that, it was a potted retrospective of the 30 year history, but it meant collecting them had no real purpose, it was just a bunch of random figures. Next year we have teams and leaders. Faction armies to build. Figures that go together and display together. Brilliant. That's why I'd love it if we did get all the 85 minibots from Generations, or we'd had a Broadside to go with Springer and Sandstorm. Or the other three core Headmasters. Individual figures are far less appealing to me.

I'm with you all.
I'd have no problem with the odd established character getting a remake, but a brand new cast doing it's own thing would be splendid. It's bizarre that such a rich franchise in terms of options for cast and characters has become locked into the endless iterations of certain characters.
A shame.

It has now been over seven years... Longer than the length of G1, since we've gotten something that wasn't just a rehash of G1. Everything, even my beloved Animated, is at least G1 based, if not an outright G1 Continuity.
Movie- G1 based Aligned (Prime, WfC/FoC, Rescuebots, NuRiD)- G1 based Animated- G1 based ReGeneration One- G1 setting IDW G1- G1 Setting
And in classics, even the precious few non-G1 updates we get IDW has bent over backwards to shoehorn in and ruin (rattrap, tankor, skybyte... Even armada starscream isn't allowed to be his own character. )
We need another Beast Wars, desperately. And by that I don't mean a full on BW reimagining (which I'd hesitantly welcome), but a fully new direction that completely reinvents the franchise and turns it on it's head. This is a major reason it's floundering so badly. Why aligned is such a financial disaster. Why every movie line since RotF has crashed and burned. TF is not where the kids are. It does not represent anything that appeals to them. It's not friendly to them, and dumbing the toys down is not the solution.
Beast Hunters is the closest thing we've come to capturing the feel of a whole new thing. Of something fresh. Something different. Even if the toys weren't that great, they're the first thing that interested me in a mainline since Animated. And the first thing that felt like a step forward since Cybertron ended.
