Will it really be that early? I thought Arcee/Brainstorm was looking like the Lost in the Christmas rush wave with these more the first 2015 proper. Not that I'd know anything about it. This just looked like a rebrand/relaunch they'd want to make a fuss of.
But then I suppose that's RID isn't it.

It's a pretty compelling photo, of the Aerialbots there. Yes, like being a kid again.

Incidentally I chased BBTS over Combiner Wars preorders yesterday. No word back yet.

Which combiner team should not be done for next year? Is there a team people don't like?

Do any, but if you're looking to appeal to long term fans the four special team leaders + Devastator are the safest bet.
Of course if one six member boxset sells well then another might too - Monstructor, which has much recent comic appearances.
The only ones I'd avoid are Raiden and the various train combiners. I don't think they translate well to toy markets outside Japan and Power Rangers will be doing them late next year

Which combiner team should not be done for next year? Is there a team people don't like? Ironically if I was picking one to drop it would be Menasor, so that's not happening. He's just a load of cars, boring! But there is something nice about the prospect of the four special teams being done again. Much as I would absolutely love a Devastator in this range I don't think it fits the Voyager/four interchangeable Deluxe dynamic, unless they start mucking about with the makeup. We know any new moulds are going to get reused as often as possible, so I think the most likely thing is what everyone's already said - past the two we've already seen it'd be Bruticus and Defensor made up of repaint parts with the possibility of the odd new figure as a sweetener. The later combiners would need loads of new moulds. But in terms of pecking order, I'd take any of them with Menasor bottom of the list.

Oohhh Menasor's top of my list! Such brilliant diverse personalities! They're the perfect Decepticon terrorist team! Go into any urban environment and cause havoc! The proximity of Humans making dealing with them very difficult. They're the perfect distraction- send them into a city to drain Autobot resources, whilst the main army makes the main assault elsewhere. The perfect team to fight them, therefore, are the Protectobots!
The Technobots are the team I've always felt unconected with. Strange considering how much I love the Terrorcons.

I had an idea ages ago - it might still be posted somewhere. Where you had different connection pegs to change a combiner from being a bot or con - bit like with the engines on Doubledealer but with triangle pegs for cons & square for bots but it wouldn't really work in a toy.

I hope they get it right this year if this wave is coming in the Christmas rush. Not like the Skids wave last year that no one could actually buy.

Somehow I feel like it's probably the stunticon one.
Man, powerglide looks rediculous in that group shot. He really needed to be a deluxe.

New Superion picture This nicely shows off the pegs holes for the guns and enables you to work out how the hands/feet transform from one to the other when put together with the display we saw previously

Oooo, the Prime Pics in there show the weapons combined as a Trailer hitch for the first time and the original Prime gun details on one of his guns, the rear half of the combined weapon.

The 5mm post is used as a gun handle and an attachment post. Laid flat it's a gun, with the thumb forming a heel spur. Turn it the other way up and bend the thumb up and it's a gun. Lay it flat again with the post pointing up. bend the heel spur down to form the thumb. Fold the piece the 5mm peg is attached to down to plug into the wrist and to reveal the 5mm socket fold the fingers out. Best combined limb hand/foot ever.

I'm more excited about these figures than any other Generations toys we've had before I think. Not only are the designs a step up on the previous ones, but the 'collect a set' mentality has kicked in big time. Sets of toys to complete. My head very much likes that. Doubly that the first wave doesn't complete anything.
The new Superion picture is aces, loving the look of that. I really do like chunky Prime too, but...
...is that a BOTTOM FLAP I spy hanging off his rear?

Yes, I think it's the waist plate for the combined mode. Does Motormaster' have one too?

I have to say that I really like the look of Alpha Bravo. Even if I'm not in a position to get most of this line I may make an exception and try to squeeze him into the budget. Fireflight looks rather nifty too, assuming that he is mis-transformed. Need to see other pictures to see if the tail-fins will fold down nearer where to here they are meant to be.
Not a huge fan of Skydive though, the rather cube shaped nature of the alt-modes of these versions does no favours to something that should barely have a straight edge to it's name.

Both Skydive and drag strip are very mistransformed in robot mode in those pics.

If you look at Prime's new vehicle pic you can see some slots in the top of the roof and a flash of blue in the enclosed space behinde the cab. We know that opens up, from Menasor, so I'm guessing the combined head is witin and folds up with the grey panel as it's base

Someone on the 2005 boards has spotted that Superion's upper legs are Silverbolt's arms and Silverbolts legs have become Superion's shoulders

The newest Op robot pics give us the clearest look yet at the combiner socket. look at the inside of his right (our left) wrist. That's on the outside of the shoulder, withthe hand bent back. The connector on the deluxe slides in from the wrist

On balance I really do like the whole Combiner Wars thing so far, but there are some odd things going on at least in the photos shown so far.
Silverbolt has always been a robot with a jet stuck to his back, but with G1 and Universe if you looked at the jet from above the silhouette was mostly jet. From those photos this one will look like a crude rectangle with a nose cone sticking out.
The rest of the Aerialbots all have arms that hang under the wings in jet mode, it looks as though they do tuck in to varying degrees, but it looks pretty half hearted. On a scout toy it's not unusual, but for deluxes it is. It doesnt bother me, given the size of the combiner joint theres not much choice, but I do wish they could tuck in somewhere when Combined.
Firefly ( I approve of the new name) and Alpha Bravo look the best of the limbs to me. Both look excellent with Proper Scramble City looking heads.
The odd this about AB is that if Hasbro kept the Slingshot transformation with the Cockpit and robot head at he same end it would have made a near perfect Blades. And with remoulded arms/cockpit and wings it would have made a very good Blast Off. Instead with the head at the same end as the tail it only really matches Vortex, but really really isn't a good fit for him in any other way.
Dragstrip looks good too, but Skydive doesnt quite look right, not as keen on the head.

I understand that the concept of combiners involves compromises in engineering, and what can be achieved within a budget has lessened in recent years, but these designs look really lacklustre to me. Is this the main point where we see the impact of the Hasbro design team change, or did that come sooner? I don't pay close enough attention these days, but some of the earlier Generations releases (Springer and Sandstorm especially) look like a whole class apart from more recent reveals. That said, the AoE Dinobots are largely great.
Feels like they could do a bit more with paint apps, as well, the current decos are highlighting the lack of complexity in the moulds for me - it will be interesting to see what Takara does there, though I can't imagine paying to import a whole set. Maybe we'll get an interesting combiner set from FP with a bit more attention to detail.
Given the choice between these and G1 reissues I would go for the latter right now.
-Jim

Some discussion as to if this is the US packaging or not. I think it is but someone elsewhere challenged me saying They're getting comics in the US, as before. These photos are of non-US samples, as evidenced by the multi-lingual packaging. He's right, they did say comics with the deluxe at the SDCC panel. However if you look at the boxed Optimus Prime and Motormaster shown at NYCC they're the four language versions. I'll offer a fiver there's been a change of plan and it's cards across the line with 4 language packaging for the US.

These look like they are going to be decent toys that are fun to play with. They feel rightlooking at the pictures and the Optimus toy brings something new to the table for the character. Given the choice between these and G1 reissues I would go for the latter right now. -Jim <Looks at box in Cupboard> I'm missing three US G1 combiners. Superion, Bruticus and Monstructor. Bruticus has been Encored, and has more modern versions in RID one of which I got a Songkong version of for pennys. Superion I'm starting to feel the need for an original of Monstructor hahahaha. No. I like my toys not to crumble to dust
