As my beautiful Cyber-chumbs may be aware, I have an ever so slight, hardly worth mentioning, teen tiny obsession with a certain Autobot Military Strategist. You may not have noticed, I hardly ever bring it up.
I was wondering, who is your 'Prowl'? Who is your obsessive character, if you have one? If not, is there a character or characters that's close to obsessive levels? And if you do have one, why are they your number 1?
Hmmmmmm?

Thundercracker.
Because he's an awesome character that in 30 years only has ONE piece of fiction that portrays him properly.

Which fiction is that, CJ? I must admit I've always struggled to understand the character, but find him very interesting.

IDW, one of the few things post AHM that I've actually liked, is that they've been true to his character, unlike others like Arcee, Skids, Tailgate, and so.
Thundercracker is arrogant and conceited. He genuinely thinks he's better than anyone who's bound to the ground. The Decepticons probably wooed him by appealing to his arrogance. But he isn't committed to their cause, and he really doesn't like innocent life being hurt by the war. He would leave the decepticons over it, but he's now pretty much bullied by fear of his superiors to leave. That's him in a nutshell.

Hmmm. I dont think I have one.... I guess AMTC is as close as I come. I dont remember at what point I started to take notice of him though. TC was the first strike jet I owned, a wingless handless junker from a neighbour, but I spent a lot of time making replacement cardboard wing for him, some of which survive to this day and still look surprisingly decent. That probably gave me an attachment to the character and when AMTC came out my mind must have gone to the question why? But not why has Hasbro made him pink, but why would TC turn himself pink? Even then I dont really remember AMTC being much more than one of my favourite Action Masters, I guess it was the decision to make the custom classic in 2006, planned over many long night shifts, that made him stand out. I really dont think I've ever had a character thats stuck with me just for the character. Gears with Spiderman and later in a UK annual story always appealed, Bumblebee was my favourite when I was young, but at some point I switched to Jazz. Then there was G2 Sideswipe, but like AMTC it was about the change of colour and how to me that implied some character trait rather than the character depicted in media. I do wish Furman had addressed AMTC in RG1, I would have enjoyed reading how the nucleon had affected him. Edit: I really should get an updated group shot, that ones like 5 years old.

I guess it would be Carnivac, but there has been pretty much NOTHING of him since before the end of Earthforce. I feel very sure however that if they do ever bring him back it would piss me off that he wasn't acting like he used to.

Carnavac was awesome and unforgetable in Time Wars. He's really stuck in my mind ever since.
CJ, that run down of Thundercracker makes more sense to me than anything else I've ever read about him! Fascinating character. Has to be one of the most complex personalities of all the G1 Decepticons.

Too true!
Er, the four there were all completed and i made another classic for blueshift.
Sxince then ive been stockpilihng thundercracker moulds. So far i have a g1, well ill probably use a ramjet body as the white will be easier to paint over, classic pretender and masterpiece. I also had and armada one but like the new generations version much more so will likely do one of them instead. I was planning cybertron, wst and the dotm mould. And prime i guess , but dont think i can be bothered with them at the moment.

Oh yeah got one of them to, but always thought it looked like a robot wearing an exosuit so plan a hybrid paint scheme, if i can ever find a way to dismantle it.

...just kidding - its Bumblebee all day long.
Though I also like Jazz, Grimlock, Tailgate, Hubcap, Impactor, Cake, Pie and Emirate Xaaron.

Marc, as a Bumblebee obsessive, do you like him 'big', as in his movie incarnation, or the original smaller BB? I've always liked the smaller Bumblebee, I like his original personality- lack of size and strength not holding him back.

And why have we still not had an Emirate Xaaron figure?! He really was a triumph of the comic. Brilliant character.

We almost had Emirate Xaaron as a Combiner, but they decided to turn it into "Ruination" instead - possibly because that was felt to be a more useful trademark to protect.
Hmmm... The original question is an interesting one. I think that in terms of what I ended up tending to buy then it would probably be either Starscream or Skywarp. But I think that this reflects a more general trend of a large proportion of my buying having been aircraft Transformers, and the tendency for a lot of these to be Starscreams as he is one of the most rehashed Jet alt-mode Transformers.

It is Ratchet of course.
Although Bluestreak, Thunderclash and Jhiaxus are bubbling under.

Karl Oh yes I'd forgotten about Ruination! That face/head is so Xaaron! We need a proper Emirate Xaaron figure though. Or should that be Emir Xaaron? An Emirate being the place? I think we've actually had this discussion before on the Hub... Big Phil?

I'm always happy to see new iterations of the "Cybertron Seven" from The Smelting Pool/Bridge to Nowhere- it's a storyline that absolutely blew my mind back in the day and that feeling has rather stayed with me. Warpath has a really good deluxe CHUG incarnation, and Powerglide has a good (albeit giant and not-very-like-himself) ultra-class figure, but voyager Seaspray I'm not fond of and Cosmos and Beachcomber haven't been represented in larger-than-legend size apart from the Energon Cliffjumper repaint. Perceptor had a really sad Universe figure with shoulders that don't lock in place and Blaster... well, the FOC Voyager was pretty good.
It's nice that they've finally got someone to fight in the form of Universe Darkmount/Straxus, and the Decepticon triple changers and coneheads have all made it into various CHUG incarnations. Shrapnel was in a recent legend+Minicon wave and the others are apparently planned, which is nice.
Out of everybody, I think Cosmos is my favourite. He's just such an odd looking wee guy with a really distinctive transformation, and he's one of the fairly small selection of green Autobots. I'm always happy to see him getting another incarnation, although I'm still disappointed that the Universe deluxe figure was cancelled back in 2008. I'd love to see him get a decent sized toy, especially after seeing his hulking IDW incarnation in the background of so many shots in MTMTE.

I've been thinking about this for a few days and I've come to the conclusion it's got to be Shockwave.
He had the mystique originally of being an unreleased toy, although I had the version that did come out here; his first appearance in the comic was so emphatically devastating he literally blew me away; then there was *that* cover with the best US art to that point; then the notion it took all five Dinobots to bring him down; the unique distinction of being a scientist while still packing a punch heavy enough to floor Megatron; and the kind of scheming mind Starscream could only dream of. He always struck me as being the only Decepticon Megatron respected.
I always loved him in the cartoon, great voice, and when he walked out of the space bridge in Prime I nearly exploded with excitement. If he gets a toy release I'll always try to seek one out, and I'd always stayed away from third party until Quakewave appeared - and that is one of he most awesome toys ever made.
Yep, Shockwave.
The only others I think that would come close are Sideswipe, Slag and Bruticus.

Shockwave. Shockwave is my clear number two. Always thought he looked great in the cartoon.... and then came the comic.... sensational.

I have three, I guess. Skywarp, Sunstreaker and Mirage. Sunstreaker and Mirage don't really get too many toys so I'm not as at risk of going destitute as if I collected, say, Bumblebee, but I'd always like to see more. I'd probably say Trailbreaker too, but he's only had about four toys in the whole thirty-odd years. I'm pretty lucky that I can avoid toys from lines that I don't really like. So I didn't pick up BH Trailbreaker, for instance. (although, having said that, if I saw BH Prowl again, I may not be able to resist...) If they'd put Sunstreaker or Mirage in there though... might have been harder to say no!

Optimus Prime. Primus wept, I know it's a dull and predictable answer, and it probably means that I'll have to hand in my "true Transformers fan" card (or at least I would if I didn't find the whole "hand in your X card" mindset reprehensible - but that's for another time) for picking someone so obvious, but yes, it's the most Optimus of all Primes. And always has been.
But then, I don't have to excuse myself for picking him. He picked me. Prime was the very first Transformer I was ever exposed to, in the waiting room at my local doctor's surgery back in 1984, and I was hooked by the very concept. And then, of course, as soon as I picked up the comics and watched the cartoons, the idea was cemented by... well we all know who Optimus Prime is and what he means.
My Transformers collection is, really, mostly a collection of Optimus Primes. I mean, I don't know how many Transformers I have in total (not that many, compared to some, I know), but I do know I have... *goes off to confront spreadsheet* ...85 variations on an Optimus. I know there's more to be had, but my wallet insists that I have to draw the line somewhere.
The other character that I have any obsession about is Bumblebee. Which just goes to show that Hasbro's cunning marketing plan worked - the young kid that I was definitely fell for the kid identification character. Which is why - to answer the question that Shockprowl asked of Marc - I passionately hate the movie version of Bumblebee. The G1 character was someone I could identify with, being the nerdy, non-sporty type; movie 'Bee is, on the other hand, a jock, and an asshole, and not someone that I could or would want to identify with. (Although, of course, I'm sure there are plenty of times I manage the asshole part.) When MP 'Bee was announced I really didn't have any choice about ordering it. Even after being underwhelmed by the pictures I've seen, I've still got to have him, 'cos he's still Bumblebee. *My* Bumblebee.
But when it comes down to it, the person I want to be, thanks to Simon Furman and Peter Cullen, is the character who, despite his doubts and insecurities, always does what he believes to be right. No matter the cost. If ever it came down to it, I like to think I'd be there, wearing a face plate and sacrificing myself...

Starscream obv.
Firstly as a child the F15 always captured my imagination. As a character, he's typically second in command with aspirations of leadership, conniving behind Megatron's back as he vies (unsuccessfully) for leadership.
This could have been so well done in the Bay movies, but unfortunately it was only hinted at.
Oh, and his Animated cartoon incarnation and clones is just amazing.
