30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #130Worlds Apart, Part One in which, the Autobot Headmasters fend off an attack from their Decepticon counterparts while trying to rescue the Targetmasters from Scorponok's clutches. Barely surviving, the Autobots argue about what to do next before Gort and Stylor transform and tell them to get on with it. Sneaking into the suspiciously quiet Fortress of Despair, Highbrow suspects a trap has been laid, right before Scorponok and the Decepticon Targetmasters burst through a wall to confront them. Ring of Hate, Part One in which, Scorponok's Decepticons lead a group of prisoners toward the Smelting Pool before coming under fire from a detachment of Autobot renegades led by Fortress Maximus. Outgunned, the Decepticons retreat and the Autobots return to their hidden base in the Manganese Mountains triumphant. Max cuts the celebrations short by claiming no one can ever win the eternal war, suggesting they leave Cybertron instead. He reveals the planet Nebulos through his pan-galactic telescope... Elsewhere, Transformers has gone Headmasters crazy: there's a free datascan attached to the cover which gives readers the low down on the UK released Headmaster toys; a competition to win one of 250 Headmasters videos by attaching the right Nebulan commander to the right Autobot; and a lovely full page advert for Headmasters Transformers: The Movie, now on sale from Video Gems for the princely sum of £8.99.

The Headmasters video - this is one thing did we get it in the UK before the US? Sept 87 we have the video stated above which is series 4, but just checked US air dates & series 4 is down aired Nov87. But if anyone has exact air dates?

The competition indeed predates the US broadcast of Headmasters. Presumably the winner wouldn't get their prize till afterwards, but what form of tape that would take (a recorded onto a blank tape version presumably? Unless they had to wait longer for the formal PAL release) is one of those things we'll never know unless the winner comes forward.

I'm sure the video was out xmas 87. I'm sure I got it then unless it was march 88. But it was the 3rd tape I got. Is there a release list somewhere? I have found a DVD release list for UK says nothing until after 2000 while US got them right away full release when DVD starting coming out. But this #130 is the first humans Transformers crossed toy line.

Yep. The Headmasters video wasn't out until 1988 in the UK. Also, the Movie didn't come out until October I'm certain. Must have been an early advert.

I was just having a look to see if I could find anything else out about this from the issues. Nothing really. The Headmasters video competition didn't close until October 16th, so the prize videos wouldn't have been sent until a while after that, but I still have the VHS cover for Headmasters and it is dated 1988 on the back.
Weird. There were 250 tapes to win in the comp, which is a fair number. Maybe it was an early run. Or maybe it was something to do with Tempo getting the distribution job in the UK as it would have happened around then to allow for the one 87 tape they did do. The Movie was still Video Gems. Incidentally, the competition address wasn't the Marvel offices - it was CPM Ltd in Thame, Oxfordshire. A company having googled that is still around today as a pretty big marketing firm. Their website shows they were taking on big brand names in the 80s, so maybe they were doing the tapes directly for Hasbro before Tempo did the commercial releases. The closing date being three weeks before the US broadcast might hint at some kind of transfer being done at the time the original master was copied for distribution for broadcast.
We should put the word out! who won one of these! Were they the retail tapes, or some kind of special pre-release?

I am gutted at the moment I can't find mine. I'm missing some posters too. I don't know what happened there - I remember even by that point I was very careful with things like free gifts and even though I put posters on the wall I folded them back up and put them back with the comic when I took em down. I can see myself doing that with some I now don't have, so I'm not sure what's happened to them. I was sure I had that data scan, but it's not with the other stuff in my old TF comic boxes. Similarly, the four A2 posters that came with issues 27-30, I've only got the Dinobot one (which is utterly fantastic and the best one anyway), but I know I'd never have thrown out the others. I just can't think where they'd be.

From their response looks like I was right for once, seems Hasbro arranged to have a special one off tape run off for the winners!

Holy smokes. That makes sense with an external marketing company doing it. Blimey, you'd have thought if that was the case they'd have made more out of it in the competition! See the Headmasters before anyone else!

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #131Worlds Apart, Part Two. Scorponok absconds with Highbrow and leaves the Decepticon Targetmasters to dispatch the other Autobots. Hardhead then turns the tide by freeing the Autobot Targetmasters. When the reckless Gort and the refined Highbrow start to argue, Scorponok believes he has found the key to solving his bonding problem - that both Transformer and Nebulan partner must be similar in nature. However, when the other Autobots come to the rescue, Chromedome dismisses the idea, instead demonstrating that shared positive goals regardless of personality are the true key. Ring of Hate, Part Two. Fort Max persuades his followers to join him in his quest for peace. An enormous ship transports the Autobots to Nebulos where Highbrow is tasked with finding a native. He stumbles across Gort and Marita embracing in a forest clearing. Caught by surprise, Gort falls off a ledge and is hurt. When word of this reaches the capital city of Koraja, the Council of Peers, led by Lord Zarak, decide to go on the offensive. Elsewhere, Transformation isn't shy about promoting the UK originated stories that will fill the next five issues, starting next week with Kup's story; on the letters page Grimlock deals somewhat frustratedly with more reader nitpicking questions over recent continuity problems; and in Robo Capers, King Nonose finds himself on the menu of a giant robot.

It's funny reliving this because Highbrow is definitely the main man in the Max free UK story and he features in the US one this week too. These days he is always fourth of the four compared to names like Chromedome. I'm wondering if this early promotion is what installed him as my fave.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #132Kup's Story. Cast aside and set adrift in space a hundred years in the past, war veteran Kup comes across a small ship being chased by two Tyroxian fighters. Overcoming his combat fatigue, he decides to help and rescues a thankful Hot Rod who asks for further assistance in rescuing his friend Blurr from a Tyroxian prison. Reluctantly, Kup agrees, but in doing so discovers he might not be so past it after all. Ring of Hate, Part Three. A dispute among the Council of Peers over whether to believe the Autobots' pacifistic intentions leads Zarak to order Krunk to secretly fire a magnetic polarizer beam at Blurr when he arrives to meet the Nebulans. Unable to control his arm, Blurr smashes a statue in the town square and chaos ensues as locals are hurt. While the Autobots discuss what might have happened, Galen falls for Zarak's plot and decides to go on the offensive. He unlocks a bunker containing an arsenal of awesome power and the Nebulans attack the unwitting Autobots... Elsewhere, Kelloggs continue their association with the comic by offering another competition - this time to win a fantastic Rice Krispies stereo tape recorder or sports kit; Grimlock refuses to reveal what the Dinobots' alt modes were before they came to Earth; and in the centre pages, a special pull-out four page Spider-Man comic written by Simon Furman warns children of the dangers of accepting lifts from strangers.

Remind me to point you in its direction tomorrow.
It's not very good though beyond the curio of showing Spidey's fallen star in the UK at the time, it has to devote time to explaining who he is!

That strip was in Thundercats this week too. Must have been in all the comics.
Speaking of which, have I mentioned two other marvel titles debuted around now 30 years back? Advertised in Thundercats, Marvel put out Inspector Gadget #1, and also Madballs #1, which I vaguely recall being a toyline.
