I read both of them. Inspector Gadget was bi-monthly!

This intrigues me greatly. How long did they last? Did they have UK strips in from the Marvel stable at the time? Who did the art?

Madballs had US art from the Star Comics issues - some UK originated covers iirc.
Not sure about Gadget though.

IIRC Gadget lasted 6 issues. I don't think it had any UK art interiors. I don't know about the covers. I haven't seen those comics for 30 years!

I started looking into this last night before dozing off. There seems to be some thinking the strips were actually re-lettered Spanish ones. It opened a can of worms for me that I'm still unraveling about other titles that came out around then. It seems the previous summer's 'let's see if an annual sells and then we'll make it a comic' approach that got Thundercats started was tried with other brands too. But because there weren't adverts for them in the comics I was getting, I had no idea to this day! starlogged.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/1987-marvel-uk-annuals-house-ad.html![](http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JO8Pouhc-dU/VOLyhtcBAyI/AAAAAAAAXo0/Wlvf8cFDCbs/s1600/1987%2BMARVEL%2BANNUALS.jpg)

Interesting, I knew those real life history stories used as filler in the TF comic's early days were translations (I think from a Tintin comic?), but didn't realise Marvel UK did whole comics and Annuals like that.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #133Headhunt - Part One. Scarvix, 2007. Death's Head strikes a deal with Terrorcon Blot to hunt and kill Rodimus Prime in return for 10,000 Shanix - the reward he feels Rodimus cheated him out of during his previous entanglement with the Transformers. Meanwhile on Cybertron, Rodimus ponders the state of the war (and conveniently laments the death of his Targetmaster partner Firebolt to connect this future story to the Headmasters one). Shockwave, leading the Decepticons from their stronghold on Cybertron, laughs at Cyclonus and Scourge's claims that they will be the ones to defeat Rodimus. Death's Head ambushes Prime and a fight ensues in which the Autobot leader appears to be destroyed. NEXT...? Ring of Hate, Part Four. Despite coming under heavy fire, Fortress Maximus decrees the Autobots cannot fight back and they retire, injured. Galen wonders if he's misjudged them and when Maximus leads his troops to the city and attempts to prove his peaceful intentions by removing his head, Galen ignores Zarak's demands that the Nebulans attack and instead states, " There will be no war today". Elsewhere, Transformation informs readers they're being spoiled this week with FOUR extra pages added to the comic totally free of charge! (yes, all those extra adverts and competitions for Kelloggs tape decks are brought to readers absolutely FREE!); Grimlock continues to fend off criticism of the comic as Jason Hotchkin notes Bumblebee has been missed out of the A-Z as Defensor and Devastator appear in slightly edited form in this month's entry; and DAVE FREAKIN' GIBBONS draws the Death's Head versus Rodimus Prime cover. ![](http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/b/b9/MarvelUK-133.jpg)

I heard that the reason Dave did the cover was because his son at the time liked Transformers & he wanted to draw one cover.

32p for a weekly 30 years ago.
Today 2000AD costs £2.65 a week and The Phoenix costs £3.25 a week. I forget what The Beano currently costs. I think they're the only three weekly comics currently on UK newsstands?

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #134Headhunt - Part Two. Death's Head lies unconscious as the big reveal shows the weapon firing in last week's cliffhanger belonged to Scourge. Hilarity ensues as Cyclonus, Scourge, Death's Head and Rodimus chase each other through the sewer systems of Cybertron (sewer systems?) until the Decepticons turn tail and flee, and Rodimus leads Death's Head through the Autobase's back door. Unable to argue otherwise, the bounty hunter is forced to accept Rodimus's offer of yet another 10,000 Shanix (this time paid in advance) for the heads of Cyclonus and Scourge. Broken Glass, Part One. The people of Nebulos are divided by the arrival of the Transformers and fights break out when some protest against their presence. Galen intervenes, but while speaking to his henchmen, Lord Zarak reveals the civil unrest has been artificially orchestrated. Galen is hurt in the scuffle and is comforted by Zarak's daughter Llyra, who refuses to believe her father when he claims Galen is just seeking power. Galen leaves to go and talk to Fortress Maximus... Elsewhere, the winning jokes in the recent Cadbury's Curly Wurly competition are revealed and REALLY show how dated they are (Did you hear about the Irish Orphanage? It had a parents' evening), Grimlock is aghast at Steven Gray's idea that the Dinobots should become a combiner, and Morg the Malicious eats Tankface the Terrible in Robo Capers. ![](http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/7/7e/MarvelUK-134.jpg)

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #135Grudge Match - Part One. Four of the Predacons terrorise a circus in Florida for fun, but Divebomb can't see the point in such banalities. Meanwhile at the Ark, the Dinobots are on video surveillance duty and Swoop sees Divebomb, the Decepticon who stole his original name. Swoop sets off for the grudge match he has long sought, but finds himself at the mercy of all five Predacons. Broken Glass, Part Two. While the council of peers continue to argue, Hot Rod and Kup lead the Autobots in building a city on Nebulos. Zarak and his cronies arrive under the pretense of seeking understanding, but when Hot Rod switches on a radio receiver, Vorath taps into the frequency to learn the location of Cybertron. Away from the Autobots, Zarak attempts to contact Cybertron in the hope he can persuade someone to come and rid him of the Autobots, but all the unintelligible sounds do is alert Scorponok to the presence of Nebulos - a world he determines to conquer. Elsewhere, Transmissions brings news that the last two Corgi game books, Swamp of the Scorpion and Desert of Danger, will be on sale in November; on the letters' page, Grimlock fields even more questions from readers about recent events by saying, yes, Professor Morris was still in control of Centurion all the way through the events of Ancient Relics and no, Megatron may probably not possibly might have intended to blow himself up on the space bridge. Ish. Maybe; and finally, Matthew Cook of Wallington Surrey offers a complete Cyclonus and Goldbug in exchange for a Shrapnel. Deal of the week. ![](http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/5/5a/MarvelUK-135.jpg)

WHAT.
But TOTP was always on Thursday.
<checks>
Huh, right, so the first four issues of Transformers are dated Thursday and there's a 17 day gap between 4 and 5 to shift the publication date to Saturday. I've never noticed that.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #136Grudge Match - Part Two. Grimlock and the other Dinobots arrive in time to save Swoop, but with both sides wanting to 'look after their own', both Swoop and Divebomb's inner monologues tell a different tale. Swoop's guilt over lying separates him from the other Dinobots as much as Divebomb's arrogance does him from the Predacons. The two begin an aerial battle that Swoop looks set to lose before he manages to drag Grimlock into it. Divebomb tries to bargain for his life by revealing Swoop's secret to Grimlock, who replies that he already knows because he's read Optimus Prime's log on the subject and doesn't care, but Swoop's desire for a clean start means the Predacons are allowed to depart intact. Broken Glass, Part Three. Galen is woken by Duros to the news that new Transformers have arrived and he leaves to visit Fortress Maximus while Scorponok's troops rain terror on Kojara. Galen tries to use the bodies of the headless Autobots as remote controlled weapons, but the idea proves futile. Instead, Nebulan scientist Arcana unveils a daring plan to merge Nebulan with Autobot, and the Headmasters are born. Elsewhere, Transformation informs readers the next Collected Comics issue is coming soon, and on the letters' page, Grimlock answers more questions from readers confused about the origin of Centurion and how Cyclonus and Scourge can be among the Targetmasters on Nebulos. Most importantly though, Michael Savva of Grays wants to know if Ultra Magnus's eyes are joined in the middle. ![](http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/0/03/MarvelUK-136.jpg)
