"Oh I am real" - Spike on the contents page. I'm sure it was this issue & not part 2.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #157 Trial By Fire! - Part 2: Having travelled all the way to Earth to answer a distress call, Galen point blank refuses to help Spike find Buster. Spike triggers the call again, but succeeds only in attracting the attention of Scorponok and his troops. The Autobots return to the Ark and a battle ensues, in which Galen realises his error and sacrifices his life to save Spike from Zarak. Spike dons Galen's helmet to take control of Fortress Maximus and chases the Decepticons off, causing the other Headmasters surprisingly to name him as their new leader. Elsewhere, Transformation announces that The Real Ghostbusters issue one is on sale now, costing a whole six pence more than Transformers at 38p for 24 pages of comic action, features, a Slimer strip by Lew Stringer and a free badge; Action Force are absent from their own strip as Dr Mindbender tries to clone Genghis Khan; and on the letters' page, Grimlock indicates Optimus Prime might well be back in future, the Shockwave of the future really is dead, and yes, Transformers can sweat.

I know this one was an unused annual cover, passed over for the one that did appear on the '88 annual, but was there a third version with Scorponok on with the orange background done by Sullivan, or an I imagining that?

He is under pressure somewhat. And half his head is made from a guy who fell and cracked his open.
I must write a story about Gort and Spock's brain.

Oh yes! Of course. I wonder if he did all three of those at the same time.

That's really interesting. Four pieces of similarly themed cover art. All seemingly Worlds Apart related because of the use of Highbrow. I wonder if he was asked to do that many in the first place.

We're only seeing half the picture. Highbrow is shooting something that's chasing Scorponok, because they're really great secret pals. But what could be chasing him??? Martin

Ratchet tricked Megatron into falling off a cliff... and pushed him through a space-time portal... and crashed his spaceship. Highbrow tricked Scorponok into letting him pull his head off. Bumblebee threw an energon cube into Shockwave's gun barrel, causing an explosion that sent him hurtling for miles.
These are the great David and Goliath victories of the Marvel TF series.
Can anyone think of any others?

I have it if anyone wants to see a scan.

Ratbat taking down Fort Max Nonsense. What pish. Max ducked and slipped on the ice. Also Ratbat looks so large compared to Fort Max he is clearly way in the foreground and Max way in the rear.

There are 4 different ones that I know of, I believe they're all rejected Marvel UK covers by Sullivan. Here's the other 3 [including the Mindwipe/Chromedome one you mentioned]:

Ratbat taking down Fort Max Yes, good one. Part of me wants to say Blaster taking down Bruticus, but I don't really want to put Blaster, who is a skilled warrior, on the same victorious underdog pedestal as Ratchet, Bumblebee, Highbrow and Ratbat. Maybe Nightbeat taking down Thunderwing by cunning twice, in The Big Shutdown and Matrix Quest. Martin

Wasn't there an unused Geoff Senior cover back in 86/87? Or it might have just been sketches I saw in the past with cover designs before the final one - unlike the Lee cover above.

Who could forget the diminutive Buzzsaw cannon blasting the mighty Omega Supreme! Me evidently, but you're right and I beg forgiveness for my oversight. Re: Unicron-killers, it was Rodimus Prime, not Hot Rod, and he didn't actually do anything praise-worthy - the Matrix just allowed him to open it, that's all. Optimus Prime did a bit more work, because he had to purge the Matrix of evil before he could use it. But in both cases, it was really Primus who destroyed Unicron in the end. I would only put one Unicron-killer in the David and Goliath category, with Ratchet, Bumblebee, Highbrow, Nightbeat, Ratbat and Buzzsaw. And that would be... Wreck-Gar! In 'The Legacy of Unicron', Rodimus Prime lost the fight on the astral plane, but WG saved the day by dynamiting the dude. Martin

Thanks for posting those images, Jaymz. Maybe you can see why some of those are rejected covers, but the Magnus one is great, easily cover worthy. That's a lot of finished art that didn't make it into the comic.
