30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #168 Meltdown! Part 1: Flame crows over his success while Springer leads Ultra Magnus and the others down under Kalis. The remaining Wreckers take on the zombie hoard and they're joined by Impactor, still struggling to regain control of himself. Xaaron confronts Flame, who transforms to attack him. Xaaron wonders if he even can transform as it's been so long since he has. The other Autobots meet and attempt to reach Xaaron but can't. Broadside and Springer go to fetch some heavy artillery, but run into Trypticon. Elsewhere, yet another new Marvel title in the form of Galaxy Rangers (24 pages, 38p, full colour) is plugged in Transformation; Combat Colin finishes his encounter with the Loch Ness Monster; and Voltan of the planet Zarg is back again to offer readers a Quosh t-shirt featuring his previous advert in exchange for one bottle neck wrap and a cheque or postal order for £2.50.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #169 Meltdown! Part 2: Xaaron panics about having to transform, but is distracted when the reactor core goes critical. Meanwhile, Magnus and the others discover Flywheels has persuaded Trypticon to help them, and the giant Decepticon batters his way through the blast doors. Flame still believes his plan can succeed, but is thrown aside by Magnus as the other Autobots arrive. Xaaron believes he can isolate the reactor to stop a nuclear explosion, but knows this will kill him. Before he can do this, Impactor steps from the shadows and skewers Flame through the head. He takes Xaaron's place and as the other flee, sacrifices his life in the radiation flooded chamber to prevent Cybertron's destruction. Elsewhere, Transformation announces the winners of issue 160's Ready Brek competition; Combat Colin goes on a health kick; and on the letters' page, Andrew Grant of Croydon announces the winners of the 1987 Transformers awards: Rodimus takes best Autobot, Galvatron best Decepticon, Death's Head best supporting character, and Wanted: Galvatron Dead or Alive best story; best cover is issue #117 and best artist Geoff Senior.

Agreed - Geoff started more people drawing & working in comics than anyone else. Shame he didn't get to do any City of Fear covers - just image if he wasn't too busy at the time.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #170 Deadly Games! Part 1: In the Jekka Amphitheatre in Tyrest, the off-worlder Hooligan dismembers hapless Autobot Chameleon before the mysterious Zabra and a baying crowd. Chameleon's corpse is returned to Autobase by a patrol and a day later, Ultra Magnus and the Sparklers search Jekka for clues to his demise. After they discover a charnel house of mangled Transformer corpses inside the amphitheatre, they are attacked by the Firecons. As the Sparklers engage, Magnus is brought low by the Firecons' apparent master - Zabra. Elsewhere, Transformation apologises for an unavoidable three pence rise, claiming the additional single page Ultra Magnus promo story should make up for it; on the letters' page, there's a first mention for this year's annual as Grimlock promises it will contain a clash between Megatron and Galvatron; and in a short promotional item, Transformers fans are offered the chance to win one of a hundred Titans Beefballs games. The American Football themed Beefballs from Kraft promise to combine two favourite meal tastes - 'prime beef and a tangy tomato sauce'!

Oh for the days when comics only went up by 3p! I do remember being outraged at the time though.

Transformers must still have been a flagship comic though. 35p is 3p cheaper than Thundercats or Galaxy Rangers and by that point all bar the outer two pages of Thundercats were printed on poorer quality paper.

You don't want to see the RID RB comics which go up & down in price by £1 an issue £3.75 - £4.99 range. But we'll never return to the days of comics under 50p

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #171 Deadly Games! Part 2: Ultra Magnus is tormented by Zabra while confined to a cell in the Amphitheatre. He is forced to fight Hooligan in the games otherwise Cindersaur will destroy one of the Sparklers. While the battle commences, the Sparklers stage a fight in their cell to get one over on the bored guard. Magnus pulls his punches in the fight hoping he can persuade Hooligan to see his point of view, but gives up when he realises the cyborg has no morals. About to deal the killer blow, Magnus throws his weapon away and instead leaps out of the arena to attack Zabra. Victorious, he dismisses the alien crowd telling them to go home and think about the value of life. Elsewhere, while Transformation still talks about Teeth, a bonus one-page Dragons' Claws promo strip finally uses the comic's correct title; readers are informed Collected Comics #9 is on sale now featuring Robot Buster from issues 59/60 as well as Kup's Story from #132; there's an advert announcing the arrival of The Return of Optimus Prime on VHS, somewhat confusingly several months after The Rebirth; and on the letters' page, Grimlock finally comes clean about Fort Max, Blaster and Shockwave et al, saying the British toy market just isn't big enough to support all of the toys that come out in America.

Bryan Hitch's new Robot Buster cover is good, but not a patch on Senior's original. It's a funny story this one, ultimately a bit of a filler, and Stuart points out in Transformation that this is present day Magnus's last story. Seems an odd way to go. Unintentional presumably. Shows how the plots were getting fragmented by this point.

Gorgeous art by Jerry Paris. Such a shame he didn't do any interiors for Transformers.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #172 Wrecking Havoc Part 1: Scourge and Cyclonus mercilessly attack American airforce jets for fun, but retreat when Cyclonus is caught out and injured. Meanwhile, Shockwave muses over the deal he has struck with the pair. On Cybertron, the Wreckers prepare for a dimensional jump to take on Galvatron on Earth. Scourge and Cyclonus arrive in a small western town to meet Galvatron and demand he give them the time jump mechanism that will return them to the future. Unbeknownst to them, the device is long destroyed. A stand-off ensues which is interrupted by the arrival of the Wreckers. Elsewhere, Transformation reveals the genuine, honest to goodness, no faking it return of Optimus Prime will happen in five issues' time; Powermasters Joyride, Slapdash, Getaway, Darkwing and Dreadwing receive their first toy advert; and on the letters' page, Grimlock dispels the cartoon myth that Rodimus Prime reverts to Hot Rod if the Matrix is removed from his chest by stating that in the comic continuity this would only happen if the Matrix was removed 'some distance' from him.

I don't get the need for Rodimus to change at all, you know. I always thought of that being a permanent upgrade. Prime didn't change without the matrix, so the fact it's different for Rodimus doesn't make sense.

I always saw it as it was kind of a forced upgrade ahead of schedule.
Had he the luxury of living his life in full, he'd have become Rodimus in terms of wisdom and given the way TF's do tend to upgrade would have ended up with a form similar to that. However, events of TFTM pushed that ahead of schedule.
