30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #173 Wrecking Havoc Part 2: A three-way battle ensues in the town, with Springer simultaneously trying to marshal the rescue of trapped humans. The Wreckers try to subdue Galvatron, but he shrugs off their attack and crows about the fact the time travel device Scourge and Cyclonus want no longer exists. Springer acts on the information and leaves the fight, allowing Scourge to overhear him say he has taken the device from Galvatron. Scourge gives chase and Springer allows himself to be caught, his plan to draw Galvatron's former henchmen away from the town coming off. Faced with the full force of the Wreckers, the pair flee, but when Springer and co return to the town, they find Galvatron has left. Elsewhere, Transformation informs readers of Marvel UK's move to their famous Arundel Street address; Combat Colin is undone by the evil Mr Magno; and on the letters' page, Grimlock controversially explains Flywheels' recent comic appearance by saying that although the Duocons split into separate vehicle modes as toys, " in real life they are more like triple-changers".

I recall that Jeff Anderson did a new version of that cover to sell as a print, but I can't find any evidence of it on his website.

Is Shockprowl aware of Grimlock's explanation of Duocons?

Just so we can get this out the way early.....

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #174 Totalled! Part 1: Aboard the Steelhaven, Fort Max's team are having trouble trying to create a stable body for Optimus Prime's mind. Hot Rod tracks down the Ark, and Max decides to approach them for help. Grimlock isn't interested and instead challenges Max to a duel for leadership of the Autobots. Goldbug surrenders himself and reunites with Blaster in the brig. Much recapping ensues, leading to Goldbug pleading with Blaster to take the injured Max's place in the leadership battle. Meanwhile, Soundwave has been tracking the Steelhaven, which leads the Decepticons to finding the Ark. Ratbat decides on an all out attack. Both Autobot ships land on the moon and Grimlock and Blaster prepare to do battle. Elsewhere, Transformation finally acknowledges that Dragon's Teeth is actually Dragon's Claws; Jazz and Jetfire feature in the A-Z; the Galaxy Rangers get a one page promo strip; and on the letters' page, reader Philip Bowen of London SW1 writes to suggest the idea of a toyline that features the Transformers' in their original Cybertronian alt modes. Not long to wait now, Phil.

I always liked this issue.
Blaster's true selfish personality is back. He is no hero and does things only for himself ultimately. Perceptor was right!
And I like the stark contrast between the two crews both in terms of tech and approach.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #175 Totalled! Part 2: The Decepticons attack just as Blaster and Grimlock clash on the moon. The Constructicons liberate disabled Decepticons from the Ark amid the mayhem while Fortress Maximus entrusts Goldbug with a secret mission. Goldbug departs in the Steelhaven with Slapdash, Joyride and Getaway. Blaster and Grimlock agree to a truce to fight the Decepticons and together force them to withdraw by damaging their ship. Fort Max then reveals his plan - that he hopes a new body can be constructed for Optimus Prime on Nebulos, which is where Goldbug is now headed with the disk containing Prime's mind. Elsewhere, Transformation claims to have specially organised the biggest Transformer battle ever for it's landmark 175th issue; the sidebar announces the 48-page Marvel Bumper Comic - a summer special featuring Thundercats, Death's Head, Doctor Who, The Real Ghostbusters, Galaxy Rangers, Dragon's Claws, Inspector Gadget, Alf, the Amazing Spider-Man and of course, the Transformers; and on the letters' page, Grimlock reveals the Autobot seen on the first two pages of issue #164's City of Fear tale was called... Chuffer.

But it was to draw us in for the Death's head reprint story. I definitely bought that issue! No way I would have read the Doctor Who 'tissue compression' story otherwise. Wonder if it's still in the box with the rest of my UK issues…

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #176 People Power! Part 1: Having come to Nebulos in search of Scorponok's Decepticons, Darkwing and Dreadwind wreak havoc and threaten death if the locals don't reveal their friends' whereabouts. They are aided by Hi-Test and Throttle, Nebulans who have become Powermaster partners to the two Decepticons. Meanwhile, the Steelhaven arrives in orbit and Goldbug and the others make their way to the planet's surface to seek out Hi-Q, the Nebulan scientist they hope can build a new body for Optimus. Much exposition ensues as Hi-Q and Hi-Test tell their respective stories, Hi-Q having released a bomb in the planet's atmosphere that poisoned all Transformer fuel sources and Hi-Test countering this by developing the Powermaster process. Elsewhere, Transformation is excited to announce the latest Collected Comics issue covers Second Generation (#63-65); on the letters' page, Grimlock is uninterested to learn that the Headmasters video is set after the Movie and that all the toys unavailable in the UK are on sale in New Zealand; and the next issue box is busting to reveal that after a 71 issue wait, next week Optimus Prime will finally return. Slow news week really.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #177 People Power! Part 2: Without Powermaster accomplices, the Autobots are quickly beaten by Darkwing and Dreadwind. Hi-Q claims not to be able to help, but is persuaded by Goldbug to insert the disc containing Prime's mind into his newly built body so he can live out his last moments whole once again. Prime is reborn with a body that combines with his trailer, but is quickly laid low. Hi-Q is touched by the nobility of the Autobots and he and other Nebulans undergo the Powermaster process to save them. The revitalised Autobots easily beat the Decepticons, who are banished from Nebulos with their partners. The Autobots also leave to rid Nebulos of Transformers once and for all. Elsewhere, Transformation doesn't see the irony in explaining that yes, Optimus Prime's personality, mind AND the Creation Matrix all fit on Ethan Zachary's 5 1/4 inch floppy disc; Optimus himself gets a special new A-Z entry to celebrate his return, being a half way house between the original bio (still mentioning roller) and the version that will eventually appear in the US comic; and on the letters' page, Grimlock is dismissive of the fact that an issue of Transformers recently appeared on TV in an episode of Coronation Street.
