But that story hadn't been written yet. The redesign should have been #180 not midway in the story

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #184Space Pirates - Part 3: Rodimus spends several pages getting frustrated that he can't contact either Wreck-Gar or Autobot City Earth. Unknown to him, the latter has fallen to the Quintessons and the former is having to suffer conversation with Wheelie while trying to pilot his escape ship. Meanwhile, Soundwave takes charge on Cybertron and after being set up by the Quintessons is about to lead an all out assault on the Autobots. Rodimus decides to take action and heads for Earth, where his advance probe finds his deactivated comrades hung from the city walls. Elsewhere, there's a spot the difference competition to win one of fifteen Powermaster Prime toys; Combat Colin and Semi-Automatic Steve chat up girls in a Corfu nightclub; and Hi-Test and Dreadwind take control of the letters page, giving aggressive answers to a host of letters suspiciously well-tailored to their first appearance.

It annoys me that Rodimus asks a question with an exclamation at the end of his sentence rather than a question mark!!!

Excellent point.
Yes, a few of the letters feel like they're made up just to embed Dreadwind's personality in the page. Like it was a trial run to see if his character would work but then ended up being used.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #185 Space Pirates - Part 4: On Cybertron, Soundwave launches the Decepticon attack before realising he has led his troops into a Quintesson ambush. He sends a distress call which is picked up by Eject, but the garbled message is unclear and Ultra Magnus decides to sit tight. Wreck-Gar and Wheelie continue to be pursued through space. Rodimus sees the Autobots hung from Autobot City's walls with his own eyes and discovers the badly damaged Arcee. She warns him she is bait in a trap, but Rodimus doesn't listen and tries to use the Matrix to revive her. He is attacked by Quintessons, who knock the matrix out of his hands. Without it, he reverts to being Hot Rod. Elsewhere, Marvel's post-merger line-up is promoted by Transformation (Dragon's Claws, Action Force Monthly, Real Ghostbusters and Thundercats); Hi-Test gives a somewhat understated first mention in the comic to the new annual by mentioning the text story Prime-Bomb; and there's a competition to win one of three Trypticon toys, in which readers somewhat depressingly are asked to name other major comic characters they can't buy as toys in the UK.

That competition made me laugh. Look at all these toys YOU CAN'T BUY. See them? YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM.
NOW NAME THEM and we'll laugh at your statistically improbable chances of winning one of three Trypticons.

Was Trypticon not on sale in the UK due to safety failings? If so how were they able to offer it in a competition here?

The reissue is the same toy isn't it? That was ok in TRU.

Where did Trypticon come from actually? Was he pre-Transformers? And the Predacons for that matter.

By this point the comic was pretty open about the US and Europe markets being bigger than the UK. Infact I think it's mentioned in the competition.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #186 Space Pirates - Part 5: Hot Rod and Arcee try to escape the Quintessons while Ghyrik crows over the success of his plan. On Cybertron, Soundwave begins to think all is lost before Ultra Magnus arrives with the Autobot cavalry. Wreck-Gar and Wheelie find friends on a deserted asteroid, and then back on Earth, Hot Rod manages to free Blaster's cassettes to help occupy the Quintessons while he transforms Autobot City into... Metroplex. Elsewhere, it's free gift time as Transformers gives away an Action Force album and six stickers; Transformation reveals this year's batch of annuals will be in shops soon with a lowdown on the Transformers one promised for next issue; and on the letters page, readers talk crossovers and Dreadwind notes that the Gwanzulums have appeared in Combat Colin, The Real Ghostbusters and will shortly appear in Doctor Who Monthly.

I read this issue thinking, 'surely this isn't his first appearance?' It doesn't feel like it can be. His bio does mention his 'Autobot City' mode, but it's interesting the comic here follows his cartoon introduction. Although the city in this case is more of a cocoon he bursts out of than something he is an integral part of.

I was always puzzled why they had to turn him on with a magic series of button pushes. Why doesn't he have some sort of early warning self-activation when his city is invaded??
