Just hope that someone in future doesn't do a year one retelling of Marvel run & inserting windblade into it. A Year One book would be good with fitting everything in but the only thing from 2010's we should have is Metroplex being called a Titan

I was always puzzled why they had to turn him on with a magic series of button pushes. Why doesn't he have some sort of early warning self-activation when his city is invaded?? It'll be another hangover from the film, as in the city had to be manually put into defence mode. The cartoon tidied that up with Blurr and Wheelie's transformation cog mission in Five Faces, but Space Pirates would ignore that because the film is the only bit in its continuity. The blurring together of Autobot City and Metroplex isn't properly defined in either continuity, which is irritating.

I always thought it was a 'last resort' type thing (like a nuclear missile) that needed to be controlled. Imagine if Metroplex constantly awoke and started trashing things every time there was a small problem.

But what right have they to hobble him? They made him the robot he is and now imprison him for it?? #mechanoidrights

Also problems would be solved very quickly if he awoke for every problem. Like err, what bins are going out this week.
Answer: they all are! *explodes from under city sending all the bins hurtling out of back yard*

Once that gimmick got old, those poor people were forced to live their lives as non transforming guns, heads and engines. (Except Lord Zarak - but then that's probably because he was a lord).

They all either volunteered or were 'volunteered'. Especially Stylor.

You're ascribing human characteristics to something that isn't human :)
He can deactivate his higher functions and remain dormant until needed. Like Navigator in Man of Iron. It's the cartoon you can have for mech rights issues for keeping the Dinobots in a cupboard for two seasons.

AH! Will we be voting between Mertroplex, Slammer, Six Gun & Scamper like in the Reflector poll? Because yes - I'm sure in that case, Metroplex would rule.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #187 Space Pirates - Part 6: Metroplex lays waste to the Quintessons and Ghyrik realises he is facing defeat. On Cybertron, the Quintessons flee, leaving Ultra Magnus and Soundwave to acknowledge each other's help but that peace between them could never work. Wreck-Gar beams the contents of the canister to hundreds of worlds, revealing the Quintesson plan to conquer them all. Back on Earth, Ghyrik attempts to use the Matrix to defeat Hot Rod, but Hot Rod tricks him by throwing his voice and regains the Matrix before hurling Ghyrik from the city walls. With his plan in ruins, Lord Kledji can only watch as Quintesson is destroyed... the cause - an expanding rift in space and time. Elsewhere, the Transformers, Action Force and Visionaries annuals get a promotional piece explaining their contents; on the letters' page, Hi-Test reveals that after a guest appearance in Dragon's Claws #5 this month, Death's Head will get his own comic in November; Sylvester McCoy's Doctor appears in a special one page DWM promo strip; and more than a little disturbingly, all but the outer two sheets of the comic change to being printed on newspaper quality stock.

I was shocked that this spectacular epic space war story was resolved by Hot Rod throwing his voice...

Of course it is - he could just link up to a speaker somewhere. I'm sure Bluetooth was a technology that the Autobots had in 2008.

The paper change is interesting because Thundercats had been in that format for a long time, but cost three pence more. So Transformers obviously thought that the cheaper paper was a better bet than putting the price up to match the younger titles that had always been a bit more.
Even though in late '88 we're into the decline of the title, it's still clearly a massive seller compared to comparative comics. This was the week Thundercats cut pages and went fortnightly to keep it alive, so shifting to newspaper stock isn't as bad as it seems.

As a child I always equated paper quality with how good a comic was. So Marvel UK made the best comics but US comic were nowhere near as good as they were on bog paper.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #188 Firebug: Story scripted by Dan Abnett. On present day Earth, Sandstorm, Broadside and Inferno set up a reconnaissance base under instruction from Emirate Xaaron. Sandstorm notices a nearby town on fire and goes to investigate. The others arrive and they discover the source of the problem is a Firebug from the planet Furnacia. Managing eventually to douse its flames, Inferno suggests sending it to Mercury in a message pod. Elsewhere, standards continue to slide as this week the entire issue is printed on newspaper quality stock; on the letters' page, Bob Newbell of Warren MI praises TFUK for its superiority over its American equivalent; and scissors threaten the issue all over the country as a coupon for a FREE can of Tango adorns the back of Dread Tidings.

I fear with some many Decepticons still active on Earth the paper quality decline... has only just begun.

I think that week must have been a mistake. The covers went back to the normal paper a week later.
What's odd is that the new fortnightly Thundercats went back to the better paper all the way through. Four less pages, but no newsprint. The change inside was dropping the backup strip and sticking in a couple of hand drawn puzzles. Once the Galaxy Rangers strips had been used up, Power Pack didn't come back. But how much would that have saved?

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #189 Dry Run: Story scripted by Dan Abnett. Shockwave runs simulations to determine that Megatron could beat Galvatron in combat. Cyclonus and Scourge discuss their relationship with Shockwave but when confronting him, Cyclonus accidentally reveals that they will kill him in the future. Shockwave concludes that attacking the pair is his best course of action, but he retreats in the face of the firepower presented by Fracas and Nightstick. Cyclonus and Scourge follow Shockwave and fall into his trap, coming face to face with Megatron. Nightstick is crushed and Cyclonus beheaded by Megatron as Scourge flees, knowing he can't risk killing the robot who will become Galvatron in his own future. Elsewhere, Transformation informs readers that the Winter Special (collecting the previous three Christmas one off stories) is on sale now for a mere 65p; on the letters' page, Alun Griffiths of Brigend writes in to spoil the entire plot of The Return of Optimus Prime; and on the back page, Woolworths present a Halloween themed advert displaying all the spooky sweets on offer this year, including a Barratts Halloween party pack for 99p, assorted pick'n'mix nasties at 39p per 1/4lb and milk chocolate goblins for 25p.

What's with this sudden run of Dan Abnett stories? Was Furman busy with something else at the time? Seems odd given how long the book was all Furman all the time.

He was writing Dragons' Claws and Death's Head at this point. Death's Head issue one went on sale sometime in the next few weeks 30 years ago. Last week was definite filler, this week is a promo for the annual really where the battle between Megatron and Galvatron takes place. At this point there's six weeks of Space Pirates, these two stories, eight weeks of US issues, the one off Christmas special and then we're into Time Wars in January.
Edit: Death's Head #1 and Dragons' Claws #6 went on sale alongside TFUK #191 in the second week of November.
It's also worth saying the credits for those two stories say plot by Furman, script by Abnett.

Nightstick's death here seems a bit understated but how often do humanoid characters get killed in this comic? Not often.
