And... that was the last UK story set in the future. The End. Wow. End of an era then. Well, end of a timeline. I suppose by that point it had outlived its usefulness. The toys must have been long gone from the shops and the film was a distant memory. Thinking about it, it's impressive it lasted as long as it did. Probably because it was much more Furman's baby than anything else. Target 2006 was much more in terms of the ongoing narrative than just a movie tie-in.

Also of note, there's a letter in this issue from one David Mapes of Ashford. I thought I'd recognise more names than I have done through the issues.

There'll be a horrendously embarrassing one from me coming up in a few issues' time

Jolly good! I never had a letter published.
Probably on account of not writing any.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #255 Worlds Apart: Reprinted from issue 130 Perchance to Dream - Prowl: While on life support in the Ark, Prowl dreams of a time he stopped the Battlechargers during their mission to wreak havoc across America. He is reprimanded by Optimus for endangering humans while doing this. A bug-like probe monitors Prowl, reporting the dream back to an unseen master who is pleased to see Prowl's violent side. Elsewhere, Transformation apologies for the reprint and claims Primal Scream will start in the colour slot soon, while Dreadwind moans about the lack of constructive letters he's received lately; things get freaky for Colin when he meets Pyramid-Head; and on the letters page, Dreadwind is astonished by Jon Kaiser of Burton-On-Trent's request to know why Optimus Prime never uses his 'bare' mode, and 'Home Boy' Mark McNaughton of Penryn comments on a reference to Omega Supreme in Derek B's track 'Get Down'. So this Perchance to Dream story is really just about plugging some of the reissued gold box classics?

Yup.
This must be Shockprowl's favourite issue.

I suppose at this point the main narrative has switched to the US with Furman, but he's definitely tamed his style there to fit the US format. The BW strips have been an odd collection of offcuts that feel disjointed given they jump across times and narratives.

Don't start that Toy First conspiracy nonsense again.
It was always about the hard sci-fi.

It’s now present-day stories about Prowl and his chums until the UK stories end. Martin

Don't start that Toy First conspiracy nonsense again. It was always about the hard sci-fi. Saying that, nowadays it sort of is the other way around - all the toys ARE based off characters and stories.

No, but I mean this is just five pages about Prowl. All stories are about selling toys but they weave quite a complex tale written with love for the subject. Even the vignettes in Aspects of Evil were jigsaw pieces in the big puzzle. This Prowl story didn't connect to anything or develop the character.

Yup. This must be Shockprowl's favourite issue. -Ralph Well, I must admit, I kinda agree with Pins. It was UTTERLY AMAZING to see Prowl in the spot light. But... even at the time, I felt it didn't really seem... Prowly.... "You have to fight fire with fire." Well, sometimes, yeah. But Prowl would just do it, not stand around talking about. Limited characterisation, other than a quick squirt with his acid pellets. He'd have out-smarted the Battlechargers in no time. ...which in itself is funny 'cos he way laying inactive in that time, I thought, like so many older characters. So, yeah, this story is fairly pants, the more I think about it.

It's a weird choice too. The story explains enough that the unseen watcher is trying to find Autobots with aggressive tendencies, but for toy selling purposes it has to be Prowl. There's loads of ways to do that well, why randomly connect it back to Decepticon Graffiti and the Battlechargers?

Well, now I'm going to be as shocked and surprised as the Classic Heroes seem to be when they discover it's the absolutely dead Decepticon from the future in a few issues time.
Perhaps Shockprowl ruined it for them too.

The story explains enough that the unseen watcher is trying to find Autobots with aggressive tendencies, but for toy selling purposes it has to be Prowl. I think it has to be more than just aggressive tendencies, 'cos he doesn't pick Brawn. I still don't know what the exact criteria were, but... oh, spoilers. Yeah, a link to the Prowl/Jazz debate in 'Crisis of Command' would have been more interesting. As for the spoilers, I think most readers worked it out well before the final reveal. Plus, Galvatron II's Mind-Bug is currently being voted on (or not) in the Evil Science poll next-door, so... Martin

I wouldnt just link it to Crisis of Command but also Command Performance, as that does reinforce Prowl's pov. Optimus sanctioned the creation of Omega Supreme who was Ark defence, but in his first engagement took out a massive amount of Decepticon troops. So having that argument again following the return to the Ark would would have made for a richer story,

If someone wanted to script said story, I would be happy to try and do my best 1990 Andrew Wildman for it...

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #256 Worlds Apart: Reprinted from issue 130 Perchance to Dream: Ironhide The bug settles next on Ironhide, probing his memories. He dreams of a time he was separated from the Ark, witnessing a hostage situation. He knows terrorists have three teenagers held at gunpoint and decides to intervene before the authorities can mess things up. He breaks through the building wall to frighten the terrorists, but just as he is about to gain their surrender, the police blunder in and cause one of the terrorists to threaten pulling the pin on a hand grenade. Ironhide freezes the man to save the day and berates the police for their heavy-handed approach. Elsewhere, Transformation announces that Collected Comics 15 is on sale now (featuring the first part of Target 2006); Kylie Minogue makes an unexpected appearance in Combat Colin; and on the letters' page, David Grew of Burton on Trent requests the return of artists such as Phil Gascoine, John Higgins, John Ridgeway and Steve Parkhouse now that Geoff Senior has taken up duties on the US comic, and he'd also like a cutaway poster of the interior of the Ark.
