Skill. SKILL! Skill, the final Techspecs value, had particular interest to the young Shockprowl and his brother. Possibly because we weren't entirely sure what it referred to, and possibly because at that time 'skill' was used often in general conversation to communicate that something was fun, desirable or simply 'cool'. "Aw that was skill!" "I'm so skill!" and so on. Now, Skill refers to a Cybertronian's ability to... well, do stuff. Accurately. It's a fascinating addition to the Techspecs values that allows us real insight into the character's overall competence. Several high Skills are recalled- Jazz, Ratchet, Ravage, Soundwave, Optimus Prime, Mirage. But also some lower Skills, such as the warrior twins Sideswipe and Sunstreaker, who had a mere 6. As competent warriors, could one be allowed to be surprised by these lower values? Windcharger also only has a 6. Does that mean he isn't very accurate with his magnetic powers? Or is it more of a reflection that his powers are difficult to control? Brawn's 3 I felt was harsh, especially as it is one of the lowest Skills ever that I can remember. Even Motor Master managed a 4. Megatron 'only' got an 8! Grimlock a 10! Skill. It has a certain... panache. |

It's a difficult one, since everyone has different skill levels for different tasks. You could be skilful at shooting but unskilful at flying or driving.
The only way of interpreting the tech-specs rating that makes sense to me is to relate it to the robot's primary function. So Optimus Prime has skill 10 as a commander, Bluestreak has skill 7 as a gunner (but may have skill 2 as a scientist), Ratchet has skill 10 as a medic (but may have skill 2 as a warrior), Prowl has skill 9 as a military strategist (but may have skill 3 as a spy). Laserbeak has skill 9 as an interrogator (but may have skill 1 as a leader).
Warriors tend to have middling skill ratings because they are not the best warriors. The best warriors are the leaders, whose skill ratings relating to their leadership functions but would also be high if they had warrior functions.
Brawn has skill 3, meaning he's not that great at demolition, 'cos he has tiny arms and very little firepower. His tech-specs say he can knock down a small building with one punch. Can't most TFs do that? Transformers who are high-explosives experts or who can transform into wrecking-ball machines would do better at demolitions. Brawn needs a different function. If his function was off-road reconnaissance his skill rating might be higher.

Might not be that exciting, but it would be nice to have a tool that allowed you to filter and sort tech specs so you can compare stats across groups of characters. Should have a G1 version of that up and running in a day or so. The mechanism is working, just need to finish adding the data. |

One question is, do you give any weight to non-official or semi-official guides that have been put together by other people. For example, the original Japanese Generations book has all the tech-specs listed numerically. You could argue that's as close a thing there is to an official guide. I've been looking around at the various sites that have tech specs but I think it's worth double checking everything. I did some spot checks on tfu.info yesterday but I'm not sure I trust it, for example I looked at Beachcomber and they have his endurance as 7.5, which is clearly wrong as the actual card says 9.
I'll have a look at the generations book. Once Hasbro G1 is in, my next job was to compare to Takara in case of differences and then add the Takara only characters. With relevant fields added everything can be kept separate if desired.
