The TMUK Hub tradition of 'True Friending' is both fascinating and, for some, terrifying. I've only ever been Trued Friended beautiful lovely Prowl things from the likes of Big Phil, Nickos and others. But others appear to be locked in an eternal battle of wills with each other. So where/when/how/why did this tradition originate?

Andu and Burns used to True Friend me in pubs by making me read crap comics so they could see my reaction. Thankfully it doesn't happen so often. Maybe I am more discerning with what I read now or trust them less! I remember this beginning to happen at least 8-9 years ago.

If you have received a nice thing then you are not entitled to use the Capital T Capital F in true friend.

I recall True Friending M with copies of the IDW Beast Wars profile books back in the day in The Three Sisters pub. He looked so delighted as he read them on the bench in the courtyard. The sun was shining. It was warm. Light flittered down from the heavens as he turned each page on an ever expanding journey of pure delight. His friends poured positive mental energy into him, willing him to keep going until it was over. Finished.

Oh I think true friending had happened before that. That was merely your induction into things. I am sure Burns and I had already exchanged dreadful comics by that point. I believe the first True Friending incident was when Burns made me watch the Star Wars Holiday Special.
From there things escalated.

True. But when did the phrase 'True Friend' first emerge?

Blimey I'd totally misunderstood this. So you mean True Friending someone is to send them something to wind them up rather than send them something as an unexpected gift?
Only the British sense of irony could devise something like this!

Nay. It is both. At the same time. True Friend gifts can also be delivered in person at the personal risk of the gift giver. But Andy is such a gentle soul it's ok...

The rules are they watch whatever I send them.
Last year they cheated and shockingly gave something I sent them away.
I may yet buy them another copy because I am a True Friend.

It's true.
However, we had already seen Nativity 1 and 2 so we had experienced the terror.
The comic you need Phil is on ebay...just saying....

I'd venture that the True Friending evolved from Scotcon and the tradition of having a really awful last prize for whatever quiz or activity is thought of.
So many Pat Lee comics... although I do think that the Dawn of the Dread Force comic was possibly the worst.
