In my never ending quest to expend my Beast Wars, and make use of toys i like that don't quite fit anywhere else, I've run into a stumbling block, that I can't figure out. Pre-beast Maximal Grimlock. I've got an eclectic assortment of autobots and decepticons that serve as the proverbial "old guard," but given Grimlock's official inclusion into beast wars, and one of only two g1 characters to actually get toys in all of BW (ravage is the other. Any other g1 characters are retcons, like Prowl, Ironhide, and Silverbolt), I feel a hole in my collection, not finding a toy to represent his pre-earth raptor.
My "old guard" consists of Ultra Mammoth Bumblebee- WfC 'Bee Sureshot- TFP Dark Energon Optimus Archforce- TFP Dark Energon Megatron Rodimus- Cloud Rodimus Arcee Primal- Either MMC Azalea, or NYCC TFP Arcee (I'm sure I have a few more, but my list was destroyed, and I'm slowly rebuilding it)
So, does anyone have any ideas for a Grimlock to add?

Actually TM2 Prowl is probably THE Prowl as well - there's some ambiguity in the tech spec www.tfu.info/1999/Maximal/Prowl/prowl.htmThe rest, including the Prowl in Magnaboss that you mentioned, are all just name reuses. Originally of course Primal & Megatron were Prime and Megatron, see the comic in the Primal Bat vs Megatron Croc pack, before that was done away with and the Cartoon story became THE story. See tfwiki.net/wiki/Optimus_Primal/toys#Beast_Wars

TMII Prowl isn't claimed to be prowl in his bio, but he does BELIEVE he was Prowl in a previous life. Point taken on Primal and Megs, though.
As for hoist, that's a great idea. Will have to consider that.

TMII Prowl isn't claimed to be prowl in his bio, but he does BELIEVE he was Prowl in a previous life. There's more in TM2 Prowl's bio that implies he is Prowl than just that. Compare with original Prowl's bio www.tfu.info/1984/Autobot/Prowl/prowl.htm "Logic is the ultimate weapon."
Prowl will keep at a task for as long as it takes. Strives to find reason and logic in everything. A listener, not a talker. Has most sophisticated logic center of all Autobots. Able to analyze and advise on complex combat situations almost instantaneously. Fires wire-guided missiles and high-corrosive acid pellets. The unexpected can often scramble his circuits.

Able to analyze and advise on complex combat situations almost instantaneously. Fires highly corrosive acid pellets. Cybernetic eye and frontal lobe interact with wing mounted ion orbs, supplying limited telekinetic power. Afflicted with ironic, dry sense of humor. Believes himself to have been a great military strategist in a former life.
No it doesn't outright say it. But with the shere number of common points there the insinuation is very much there that this is the original Prowl, perhaps one who only half remembers his earlier existence.

Off topic (sorry CJ), I've always considered Owl Prowl to be a 'reincarnated' Prowl in my own little mind, but seeing it compared like that is very interesting! Thanks Big Phil!

As for hoist, that's a great idea. Will have to consider that. I like the idea of identical Beast formers having the same pre beast vehicle mode. The colours was a coincidence that makes the association stronger. If anything the Armada crane bot would make a good pre BW Megatron with the shovel arm serving as Megs's beast head arm.

Actually, I disagree on it being good for those who share beast molds to share prebeast molds. Tigatron and Cheetor for instance are soooo different in personality and function, they should never in a million years share prebeast molds. Something fast and sleek is necessary for Cheetor. DofP and Timelines Animated got it right with him. But Tigatron needs something bigger, slower, tougher. A sleek rocket car or racecar just doesn't work. I also would not ever cast Tarantulas and Blackarachnia from the same mold, either. While Gen Chromia would be perfect for her, it would be horrible for him. (But then, two of my biggest irritations from BW are Tigatron and BA being repaints of Cheetor and Tarantulas, to begin with. )
To me, it's about what suits and best represents the individual character. If it's the right mold (gen armada starscream w/jhiaxus' wings), I have no issues with prebeast Terrorsaur and Hydra/Lazorbeak sharing a mold.

I think Blackarachnia and Tigatron can be forgiven as toys: they're cheap repaints done at a time when the line did far far better than expected in the US (and just before the cartoon started)
But if you want those you'll have bought the Japanese versions over the US ones cos they're so much better!
