Yeah, Stom it was quite funny in the xbox thread but a little bit over the top in four threads.

It's what the kids like to call trolling - if you'd done it once it would be a very funny jape. To carry it on is a little mean spirited and not in keeping with the spirit of the Hub.

Well it amused me and reminded me more of the Hub of old. I look forward to a similar reply from Stomski in every thread.

PTISH!! To have posted it once would have massively detracted from the joke. The fact that I even pointed out in the XBox thread where I f*cked up shows that I wasn't taking the posts seriously.
In other news and keeping things on topic - Started playing Paper Mario on Wii-VC. Not far in so far (only just got out of the Goomba village). Loved Paper Mario-TTYD and Super Paper Mario was an enjoyable romp (but not great).

Finally something we both agree on! The thousand Year Door was one of the best Gamecube I played on the console and this in turn got me interested in the Nintendo 64 original. I downloaded it from the VC about two years ago and completed it a few weeks later. Quite a good game but it isn't quite as good as its Gamecube successor.

Let me know how you get on with Paper Mario. I have it and Super Mario RPG saved up for a rainy day. Loved TTYD.

Sonic Fan remixFans get tired of waiting for Sega to release a 2D Sonic game in 'high-def'. Do it themselves.

Is Sonic 4 not in HD?

Paper Mario... Finished 4 chapters and really enjoying it. Don't think it's as good as TTYD, but still ace.
Re. Sonic 4:Ep1... Yeah it's in HD, but the graphics still have an 16-bit design quality to them. That Fan Remix really seems to have pushed the boat out, especially on the backgrounds.

Been playing Sonic 4. 'tis alright, but I feet that it's a bit lazy (esp as I've only got part 1 for my money). In some ways it seems to be using nostalgia to justify doing everything in the same old way (Nintendo didn't with New Super Mario - why do Sega?), and that fan game just shows it up.
Ogre Battle. Can somebody explain the appeal of this game to me? I bought it on the back of a really good review on Eurogamer (can't track down the review as it was in a download round-up), but it seems to be the dullest game in the world. I get to tell some dudes to walk towards a building and then I have to wait while the computer runs through endless battles upon which I can have negligible impact. And at the end of all that I get to watch painfully tedious, poorly-written cut scenes. What am I missing?
I did quite enjoy that I got to choose ruining the world and generally screwing things up for people as my modus operandi, but then the game completely ignored this. Overall, though, it sums up most of the retro games I've downloaded on Virtual console / Wii ware: either, not as good as I remember (Mario Kart / Secret of Mana), or too bloody hard for words (Probotector / Mega Man 9) or not as good as I remember and also, just plain shit (Blades of Steel / Streets of Rage).

I heard on the videogamer.com Back On Topic podcast that the physics of Sonic in Sonic 4 had been changed. Apparently in the original Sonic games Sonic would skid to a halt when you stopped him moving, in Sonic 4 he supposedly stops dead when you stop moving him. This sounded as if it was going against the whole ethic of going back to the original Sonic games with Sonic 4.

Lol, who was it who gave me Blades of Steel? Someone on The Hub gifted it to me one christmas. It's actually kinda interesting when you play it two player. Because moving up and down not only controls your keeper as well as your defender, you're switching between covering the shot and trying to move your defender in for the tackle. Also the shooting game between periods is a nice break.
Streets of Rage - Should have gone for the sequel!

Don't say that, I'm liable to download it!
I remember loving the Blades of Steel fighting as a kid, and that bit is still kind of okay, but the sound of the crowd - it's unbearable.

If I remember correctly Ogre Battle was largely a game that tried to cash in on rock group Queen's back catalogue. One of their early songs was called Ogre Battle and I think a few more of their songs appear in the game. I've never played the game (or games because I think a sequel was made) but, being a Queen fan I have heard of it.

I was aware of this but I think it was only released Japan (or America) with limited success. I think it only played NES games anyway and nothing new was released for it. If you delve a little deeper into the archives of computer gaming you will find quite a few variants of games consoles that slipped under the radar.

I only found out about this yesterday but thought it was a bit odd.
The recently released red Wii comes with NSMBWii, Wii Sports and... Donkey Kong - Original Edition.
It turns out that this last game is the NES port of Donkey Kong but with the pie factory level put back in:
So now it's a bit closer to the arcade original which is good, but then I wonder why they didn't just include the arcade version instead.

I remember the NES II being pictured in Nintendo Magazine System way back when. I would have liked to have seen it released.
Speaking of which. Anyone remember the Master System II. That thing was a horrible remodel. Cheap plastic and no reset button. What was Sega thinking?
Playing Clash at Demonhead on emu atm.

I suppose the Master System II was quite a bit smaller than the original - and the shrinking of technology always appeals to people. I guess it was also cheaper to produce, especially as they left out the card slot.

I'm wondering whether we should ask Zudobug how he feels about these companies producing these updated/smaller consoles??

Speaking of retro gaming, if you haven't played Cave Story, then you need to hang your head and kill yourself out of shame. And then play it. You know, years later and I *still* haven't beaten the final bonus hell level. Still an amazing game though! Here is a video of someone doing it in 2 mins. Madness. (Basically there's an option at the end if you do everything right to not escape with everyone else for the 'proper' ending but instead descend into 'hell' and beat the final secret boss. It's literally a hell level; your weapons are all reset to 0 and there's no save points and tons of enemies/one hit kill traps. It's madness!!

I approve of your taste good sir! But yes, definitely play it. And don't go checking any guides beforehand, you will do it wrong first time, and that's a massive part of the magic!
