I've decided to bite the bullet and look at upgrading my PC. I've already picked a new processor and graphics card, shooting for the budget end of the spectrum because while I've only a vague idea what 4-layer full-screen anti-aliasing is and no idea at all what angle independent anisotropic filtering is, I'm fairly sure I can live without them. However, I'm still undecided on a motherboard. I picked up an issue of Computer Shopper seeking advice, but there was no sign of the pages and pages of "recommended" bits of kit from the last time I picked one up. I know there are three or four different socket AM2 motherboard chipsets- does anyone know (or know where I can find out) which one is best and, better yet, suggest a good board that has them? Again, I'm angling for performance on a relative shoestring- I have £80 in credit at Dabs.com due to a previous return (a new graphics card, wouldja believe) and I'd like to get everything for under 150 quid of fresh outlay. I guess I'll need DDR2 ram as well, but I'll consider that nearer the time. -Nick

I thought so too, but then I couldn't find any reviews of Nvidia 8600 cards I ended up finding another place, don't ask me where, that did a few comparisons. Eventually settled on an XTX card that got pretty good reviews. I spent entirely too long reading motherboard specs before eventually settling on a good Asus AM2 board with an Nforce 570 chipset (a damn sight cheaper than the 590 and its only disadvantage seems to be in running two graphics cards, and since I don't need to run my games at 300fps I wasn't bothered). Picked the only 2 x 1Gb DDR2 ram set Dabs had in stock and emptied my Paypal account (and a bit more besides, but happily not much). It should all arrive later this week, and I'll bung all the new stuff in as soon as I've got the time and bottle. -Nick
