Upgrading to Win8.1 is a good idea as is installing CCleaner, Malwarebytes anti malware and spybot search and destroy.

Back in the world of Windows 7, I've started using ReadyBoost. I've ended up with spare SD cards, so decided to use one for that. I haven't done a scientific study or anything, but things certainly seem to be running smoother.
