Indeed. Draw a straight line from Hull to Southampton, and Brum and Swindon are both pretty close to it. We'll be by mid-late afternoon. Only renting a car this time, as it's about 1/3 of the price and we don't have nearly as much stuff.

East up the M4 to Newbury then down the a34 and join the M3 iirc

So I opted for the safer Birmingham*/Swindon route instead. *Obviously safety is relative when talking about driving through Birmingham. |

I would say geography is relative when you're driving through Birmingham. Distance is relatively fixed, but direction is a matter of philosophy.
