I was just hunting for something on one of my shelves and picked up Rodimus Prime. Looking at his face, he has such an old looking face. Like he has seen much. It makes me think we had a missed opportunity regarding his characterisation.
Instead of scrambling to live up to Optimus in the Sunbow show, or lurching from crisis to crisis in the Marvel comics run we should have gotten a really competent and sage Autobot leader.
He is another in a long line of Transformers whose characterisation doesn't quite match his toy.

I always thought he looked really old back in the day when I had his toy. Either that or he was straining to hold in a fart.

It never occurred to me when I had the toy as a kid.
Looking at it now though I can't believe I missed it.

Rodimus to me looks like someone's given him two black eyes. They're all puffed up.

I must admit that as a kid I initially picked up on Rodimus looking old, and his described role of "Autobot Protector", and - before the comic and Movie gave him any real characterisation - had begun seeing him as a war-weary, "Ronin survivor of a destroyed clan" roaming Cybertron resisting the Decepticons and helping the oppressed neutrals any way he could. A 'bot who had been a General before the war was lost, and might have one day ascended to leadership but truly believes one day Optimus Prime and their lost heroes will return and the Autobot cause will rise again.

That would have been a very striking and grand take on him.
I can picture that too.

The toy says his function is 'city commander' - so I thought he was like "Mayor of Metroplex" or something... But.... on the other hand I vaguely recall a UK Ladybird book which had him in full command... Could this be a US/UK thing?

Ultra Magnus - he can't deal with the difference between federal and local government right now!
