A new telling is the only way to go, though does present itself with problems, but I'd like this to do well. I'd also like to see IDW pull the finger out and give some of the other continuities some attention.

Growing up as Transformers fans in the UK trained us well to be able to deal with two different versions of the same story - and this one should be easier, since they're not running concurrently.
Whilst the TV show can probably never be topped, that doesn't mean there's not room for a decent comic. I was remembering that when I first heard of the concept of Beast Wars I thought it was nonsense, and wasn't particularly interested. And then I saw the show, and it was good - and that's all that matters. It just has to be good.

Oh I agree, but it's some of the more trenchant and vocal BW fans that come to mind. Whatever the flaws are of previous attempts at BW comics, almost all valid criticism was drowned out by the morons howling that it wasn't the show, and having seen how far online discourse has degraded since then...well I have concerns.
But I would kill for a post BM continuation - not immediately after but allowing for the dust to settle, because making them all technorganic in my mind introduces much shorter lifespans, and that would make for an interesting backdrop to tell tales.

How I understood it, it starts as a couple one shots or something, then launches as a full ongoing.
I really like the idea following the basic plot, while doing things the show couldn't due to resources. Such as additional characters, and more complexity.
One of the issues though with BW, is that G1 has had so many reboots that they can get away with new takes on the characters. They can make Chromedome an ex-cop neuro surgeon or whatever. They can have Cyclonus be a grouchy old warrior in love with a peppy little Tailgate. They can make Bumblebee into a grim, hardened warrior who's seen everything. In fact, they need to because it's the last way they have to keep it fresh. But BW doesn't have this. It's been a quarter century since this part of the franchise has been used in a meaningful way. Terrorsaur still needs to look and act like Terrorsaur. Cheetor still needs to look and act like Cheetor. It doesn't need to be the show, but it still largely needs to be the same set of characters we remember. Which is why the inclusion of the batgirl excites me. New characters from the start allows for the new things that this reboot needs. If they keep the original show characters on point, new and previously toy only characters create an entirely new dynamic with them.
So long as they don't go overboard and have 100 characters running around like "The Gathering."

I just don't want a retread of the Vok and the whole we don't know it's Earth, Agenda et al. Keep the characters as we know them and do something different.

Agreed
I do hope the "we don't know this is earth" angle is dropped immediately if not very soon. (It wouldn't bother me if it's for a few issues while everyone's still disoriented). Because the only reason that even existed was because the showrunners didn't know it was earth until they decided on it.

If Burnham has half the grasp on these characters as he does on the Ghostbusters, there's nothing to worry about there.

Same here. Or even a re-imagined Beast Machines story that expands upon the original premise, without the budget constraints of late 90s/early 2000s CGI. I re-watched Beast Machines recently and was surprised how well it had aged. If you edited episodes to focus upon the core story arc, replaced the late 90s techno, and found a way to upscale everything, it could work as a low-budget Netflix mini-series today. Disclaimer: I've just finished watching the Netflix Siege series and my expectations for TF TV shows has dropped considerably.

Issue 1 is out today.
Nice art and colours from Josh. Hard to judge the story just now as it's still in mostly familiar show territory, expanded a bit and focused on a few character dynamics - it feels like Beast Wars. The backmatter alludes to an Ultimate Comics approach being in people's minds and I would say this is a fair assessment.
Enjoyable and I'll stick around for a while longer.

I enjoyed the first issue. The script was quite fun, and felt quite a fresh take on Beast Wars. I found it a nice contrast to the Transformers ongoing which, to me, started by retreading old ground, in a dreary fashion. I found the art quite fun, too, though Burcham does come across to me here as a poor man's Roche. As for the "Beast Wars 25 Years" emblazoned on the cover, I never can quite get my head around that! Well, okay, 23 years in the UK - I still very clearly remember discovering and promptly buying Beast Wars in Woolworths in January 1998 while home from university - the Primal bat / Megatron crocodile set.

I wouldn't say a poor man's Roche, his style has always been a more cartoony Geoff Senior and having worked with Nick for years, I dare say a few things have been absorbed.

I can see your point, but it looks more Roche than Senior to me, especially the A cover, which I thought was Nick's when I first saw it in Previews. That said, Nick has himself said that he was influenced by Geoff Senior.

I was catching up on my comics a few days ago and what do I find in the Beast Wars letter page? A missive from our very own Llama God! (I agree, I also feel old with all those "I remember Beast Wars as a kid" letters.)

Read book 1 today. Hmmm. I really love the look of it but the story feels little more than a pointless retread of the show. Not sure what the point of it is and I was a bit bored. If I hadn't already bought volumes 2 and 3 I would have stopped there.

Volume 2 read. It continues to look gorgeous but still feels pointless as a reboot. It isn't different enough though Skold is a good new character. Most of this could still fit within the original TV show though. Bit of a head-scrtacher. It's not bad, I just am struggling to see a defining reason why this is a reboot.
