I've pre-ordered UW Computron. My love for Nosecone is deep and as I haven't read the comics I have no attachment to Scrounge so it was an easy decision for me.

Alas, I'm genuine. I have a pile of the paperback collections of the comics but haven't read them yet so Scrounge means nothing to me. Whereas Nosecone is one of my favourite G1 characters and toys.

My one complaint about Takara is that the colors are not show accurate - or maybe Japan had only black and white TVs in the 80s?

They've played a game of Musical HandFootGuns here:
Afterburner has Lightspeed's (Breakdown/Wheeljack) Lightspeed has Strafe's (Blast Off) Blast Off has Nosecone's (Rook) Nosecone has Afterbruner's (Groove and before that Alpha Bravo etc)

What do you want to see next: Nosecone, Strafe or wait till the full colour reveal on Tuesday?

It works for me. I think if I can find the funds for UW Computron and then maybe Airraid, Skydive and maaaaaybe Mirage, that'll be all the combining toys I need. I've already got Defensor, so that'll be one of each base mold, right?

This is the way to go isn't it. Far more thought than the Hasbro one. That's a really nice remould.

I'm liking Japanese Nosecone more and more! Far better than the weedy US drill!
Isn't it bonkers how different these two are!! I wonder what the story behind this is!

Money? Hasbro want to do it as cheaply as possible, but Takara seem to get more return from putting out more accurate products.

Yes, but if the molds are already made, why redo them completely different? And alternately why did Hasbro not use Takara's molds, unless Takara saw Hasbros and decided to go their own way, but the fact they seem to be both released at a similar time doesn't give that much time for that to happen.
And why switch around Lightspeed either? I mean neither of those car molds work great for him!

I would love to know. I'd love to understand the relationship between Hasbro and Takara and how and why they work differently on things. In the case of Computron it could be that as they're getting similar release windows that they were just developed separately. Are we absolutely certain Afterburner is the same in both cases? It's probably that in terms of finances and release schedules Hasbro and Takara work independently, so Hasbro probably did their own thing cut according to their own financial cloth and Takara follow afterwards with what they're given to play with.
It looks like with CW Hasbro took the lead with retail lines and Takara followed as they seem to have taken what they can from Hasbro and have tweaked it to make it more a collectable than a supermarket toy line. Hence the boxset approach and more stringent adherence to G1. All the way along Takara seem to have taken what Hasbro have produced and improved it, or in the case of figures like Grand Galvatron have taken the available moulds and reworked them into something original, but it's still - 'what's this? what can we make of it?'. Now Hasbro are basically doing the same thing with the boxsets at the end of the line, maybe there's even less communication over future products. From Takara's point of view they know what the moulds are Hasbro have done, and are working out how they can springboard from that to make their own toys.
I think that's why Lightspeed is a different mould on both figures. It's down to the perception of the different people designing the toy. They're not communicating about it, Takara's designer may have seen the Hasbro plan and just thought the other mould worked better. Same with Nosecone; Hasbro saw Brawl and thought they could get away with changing the barrel and reusing the mould, Takara didn't think that would fly and chose to remould Rook instead. For Hasbro it's about economy, for Takara accuracy. Brawl with a drill bit for a gun barrel is way off Nosecone, but Wheeljack isn't *that* far from being Lightspeed.

It's odd, I'm looking at it and essentially it's a tracked Rook without the front of the top of the vehicle. The cockpit is making up very little of the vehicle but it is working. I'm not sure he has enough guns though! I predicted Nosecone from Rook when I reviewed Rook but this makes me want to see my other prediction there: Rook, in green, with treads and a modified HFG as the turret to serve as Brawl. I thought it would work then and I'm even more sure now.

It's down to the dance Hasbro have been doing with the moulds and waves. Brawl could have come from Rook - but then Swindle couldn't have because it would mean two remoulds from the same base figure, which hasn't happened, and also both of them being in the same wave, which also hasn't happened. So I guess whoever makes the decisions looked at Swindle and Brawl and decided a tank would be a better new mould to have for Wave 5 than producing another car. Then Hound was covered as a repaint, and Nosecone as a cheap part replacement.

Brawl has extremely limited reuse potential. There's no obvious choice inside the context of existing combiners. Nosecone is about the only one. I think hasbro's choice is down to money. This is the first retail repaint it's getting. Hasbro bites the bullet to help the mold pay for itself. Takara chooses something closer to accurate.

Well with two different Computrons coming out that means choice for fans so there will be nothing to complain about.
Pedants note: I thought Tomy bought over Takara years ago? The toys have long since had TOMY on them.
