Just in case anyone was in any doubt as to whether or not Hasbro actually acknowledged the existence of the UK...

Well, reading between the lines of the press release, given that it sounds like they have been forced to chose to attend either Nuremberg (attracting buyers from all over continental Europe) or London (attracting buyers from the United Kingdom) due to not having staff availability to cover both events... I'd say that in terms of volume of likely sales lead generations they have probably made the most sensible choice.

Working for a large corporation myself, I also know that using poor sales as an excuse to not focus on a certain market area doesn't actually help in the long run. Putting better, cleverer effort in to analyse what isn't working (above "no money") and come up with a better sales strategy is actually what's needed. But who am I to point out the obvious to large corporations? I'm not the one with the massive salary or shares to protect, just someone who can see the bleeding obvious...
(I may have tangented in frustration there.)

Makes me laugh really. Hasbro UK unable to exhibit at UK toy show due to 'global complexities'. "We just can't do it," said a Hasbro UK spokesman, "As the UK arm of Hasbro it's vitally important we exhibit everywhere in the world except the UK because we know full well whatever we show won't actually come out anyway and people are beginning to rumble us. We're seriously looking at putting on a really good show in Turkey this year because they don't know that we break our promises and are full of hot air."
He then added, "You won't tell them will you?"

Global complexities. What utter bullshit. We're paramedics and scientists and businessmen and parents and hard working people, and writers and creators and imaginators... not idiots. Do they really think we believe corporate bullshit like 'Global complexities', "complexities of the global toy fair blah blah"? Utterly meaningless bullshit dreamed up by someone who spends most of his time trying to justify his own existence within the organisation.

Even so, as Hasbro UK, the primary market SHOULD be the UK, no?

Pretty sure Hasbro UK actually oversee European distribution as well these days, so the Nuremberg fair is the one it would be more sensible to attend.

This is where just that extra bit of explanation on the part of Hasbro would have stopped a million internet rumours. If they'd said from the start 'the dates clash and we can't be in two places at once' no one would have even questioned it.

To be honest, there is every chance they did, but that doesn't make for good reporting. That's exactly what they told my department when we were getting briefed on "talking to the press". Your first point of contact may be good at getting down what you say and not dropping bits out or inventing anything else but after that it's a giant global game of Chinese Whispers. -Nick

My wife works for a US company with a UK office. Its a different industry but still sales and they have endless conferences and stuff. She says that if they didn't send somebody to the main event in any given country then that market doesn't mean anything to them. If there was a clash then they'd send someone junior but they'd find someone.
This must be a vicious cycle for Hasbro. 'Small market'= small sales team = market stays small.

I did think about that, but then it would mean having two display stands - one of which would probably never be used and Hasbro being a major player would need a big impressive presence. I can imagine Hasbro would rather not go at all than just send the teaboy with a box of deluxes, because that would give a worse message than abstaining totally.

On this topic, I feel I must apologise for my general absence from the Hub last year. As a subscriber to several toy industry magazines, I could have clarified the situation. Basically, it was the Germans' fault in scheduling their (larger) trade fair, leaving the UK toy industry scrabbling around to make the most of the situation.
But to put it into perspective, Hasbro normally attends London. Mattel doesn't.

No need to apologise Nigel. T'is good to see you back again though!
I figured it was something to do with an unusual clash of dates, interesting to get that confirmed ta!
