Um. I have to say, last time I watched Trial of a Time Lord, I enjoyed it a lot. Although that was in one sitting, with alcohol, so I can't say for sure. But I'd *definitely* re-watch Trial of a Time Lord over Combiner Wars any day.
Combiner Wars, you see, is pure shite.

Trial is a breath of fresh air after Season 22. Suddenly everything feels right. The Mysterious Planet is genuinely good if you can take Joan Simms with a pinch of salt.

I'm still looking for plusses in Combiner Wars you know. As a whole it may be a bit odd, but there is some nice stuff in this. I like the idea of Devastator getting pissed off with being pushed around and used and turning on Megatron like a rebellious teenager, and Megatron respecting Starscream for playing a long game and winning is also nice.
I think the problem with it is that it feels like the final part of something we haven't seen the beginning of. It's trying to explain the backstory through dialogue snippets while maintaining the pace of an action finale, but because there's so much of it that doesn't make sense, like Victorion turning up out of nowhere, it's not easy to piece it together. They're trying to fit a story that's much bigger than 40 minutes into the short time they have, and it's getting confused.
