Phil's edit: Spun off from the MP-25 Tacks thread
Great Scott! look at that. He's actually slightly taller than the other car robots. Finally a bit of variation in the MP cars' heights! Tracks was always a tall bugger among the original cars. Mind you, Wheeljack was always ultra-wide and his MP figure is sort of weedy by comparison. Ironhide looks like he's going to be a lanky sucker as well. He's going to be awful cramped in van mode I suspect. -Nick

Yes I like the fact Tracks is lanky/taller, fits the character and is nostalgic as well. Ironhide being lanky is all wrong though. I fear for MP Ironhide.

Nah the Minivans should be taller. Gives them a bit of weight of authority, as befits Prime's bodyguard and the reassuring medic. Nice safe big hands....

I do hope Ironhide and Ratchet area little taller, the cars currently look a little out of place especially next to the jets. They need a bit of height mixed in.

I've watched every episode of the G1 cartoon many times over the years, but I'd never noticed a difference in height so significant with those two. They weren't like that in the comic. Were they? please don't say they were, my world will implode.

I couldn't say, in all honesty. I think there's a size chart for everyone kicking about in one of The Ark books, but this is just my own personal preference, really.
Like, I think Trailbreaker should be the tallest Autobot car. No real evidence for that, just how I feel.

Oh I've signal at work again!
In the comic I think it varied. They were often the same size as the other cars, but in the odd story they were a tad taller. I remember in Robot Buster (I think) Ratchet was drawn taller than Wheeljack. In the cartoon they were usually a head taller, but no more than that.

Yeah, that could be it. I do remember that sequence and, yes, Ratchet was significantly taller than Wheeljack. That must be where I got the idea from!

I don't recall Ratchet being portrayed as that tall again in the comics. Always more or less the same size as the other Autobot cars.

Okay, as far as headcanon goes, I think Ironhide and Ratchet should be a head or so taller than Prowl. Trailbreaker a bit more than that, maybe up to Soundwave's shoulder. Tracks and Mirage would be between the minivans and cars height, and Jazz about the same as Sideswipe, with Sunstreaker a little taller. Hound I'd put at Wheeljack height.
This is, I stress, all how I see them. I've got nothing to really back it up, it's just where my imaginations says looks 'right'.

We are brothers-from-antoher-mother, Urzu, I agree with that run-down completely. That is exactly how I've always pictured it. Seek*- Strike Planes on a par with Soundwave, and Megatron, Prime and Shockwave a head larger still.

For me it depends where I most associate the character. For the most part thats the toys for me Hound I largely see based on the toy making him one of the smaller autobot cars, I have no idea how tall he is in the comic or cartoon.
Most of the cars I think of as about the same height except for Wheeljack whose a bit shorter and stocky. Tracks a little taller.
Inferno and Grapple are the biggest two, again based entirely on toys, I guess they were that way in the comic/cartoon too.
Ironhide and ratchet, yeah a little bigger than any of the cars, but smaller than Inferno and Grapple who to my mind are Prime sized (oh how I want masterpiece versions of them).

Ironically, the One-box that Ironhide and Ratchet transform into is actually relatively narrow - whilst certainly taller than the cars I would say that it is probably significantly slimmer than something like a Stratos or a Countach. So if you were going by size of vehicle mode than they'd be at most the same height, if not smaller. (And the same logic does support Hound being fairly small - the Willy's Jeep not being very large, especially compared to it's descendants and successors).

It's fine. We're not going anywhere near 5mm increments. Let's just stick with 'bigger than' and 'smaller than'.
But this is why it's so mind bending. Not thinking about it has produced some astonishing revelations, that Ratchet according to the cartoon is actually quite big. It makes no sense to me. He's the doc, the fixer upper, why is he heavyweight muscleman size?
Actually, you're right. I can't stand the confusion in my mind either.

The setting up the thread is the easy bit: find an appropriate post and tell the board to move all posts from that point onwards to a new thread.
Putting a link in the old thread to the new one, a link in the new thread to the old one and adding some quoted context takes the time.

Sunstreaker is taller too, but not by a lot.
The Trailbreaker taller comes from his appearance in MTMTE when he uses his radar dish and looks very tall and thin.
Dinobots taller than cars by at least 50%

(Note: I'm figuring these estimates as I type. When I started, I had no idea what I'd end up with)
Dinobots size depends on if you believe autobots mass shift in robot. Which IMO is just rediculous.
Even so, a nissan fairlady is one of the smallest cars used in transformers, and Prowl would ACTUALLY be smaller than Bumbles. Beetles aren't actually as tiny as many TF fans think, because of Bumblebee's portrayal.
So if you're going on actual sizes, then saying the dinobots are 50% larger than one of the car autobots is being extremely generous to the autobot. Triceratops and Stegosaurs were around 30' long. That'd make a biiiiig robot. Prowl would honestly stand 10' or so, based on his transformation. 12' if you want to be generous (i give more height advantage to those who transform like Tracks Sunstreaker, or the minibots. They take the length of the car and add to it. Prowl, jazz, and Sideswipe almost fold the car in half after expanding the legs so they lose a lot of height that would have been added onto the natural Length of the vehicle). The dinobots lose quite a bit of length from their tail in robot mode, since not a lot of it gets used. However, there is a LOT more mass in the core of their body than the cars. I'd say that those two could easily push 20' in robot. If not larger. So those guys are the medium sized dinobots. It's reasonable to say they're twice the size of an autobot. That puts them on par with Optimus (who himself is around the 18'-20' mark) Tyrannosaurs averaged around 30', so in reality Grimlock would be equal to Slag and Snarl. But when has fiction not gone for the largest end size estimate for a Tyrannosaur? They're usually 18' tall, and 40' long. So in beast mode, Grimlock is as tall as Optimus in robot. Like the others, he loses quite a bit of tail length in transformation, and beast height does not translate to robot height due to transformation scheme. His actual body mass is similar to the two herbivores, if not a bit smaller. Factoring all this in... Yeah. I'd still be around the same size as them. Sludge. Apatosaurs were around 80'. But let's be realistic, most of that is neck and tail. You probably lose 20' in neck, and 20' in tail. That's STILL forty feet in solid body mass. Twice as much mass as the other three. When you take out the long legs, and do the rearranging... Sludge could easily be 30' tall.
Swoop is the hard one. If you were to only base him on the real animal, then we'd have a robot that's 8'-10'. Because the largest, extreme estimates for Pteranodons have them being on par with humans. So 4'-5' in height if they stood upright like us. Swoop transforms differently than most transformers, in that his legs unfold from his alt mode's back, and he almost doubles his height. Now, I'm happy with this estimate, but most people want him to be on par with his teammates, which requires an oversized pterosaur. To get him to around 20' tall in robot, he would need to be doubled in size. 10' in beast mode (i'm actually fine with this, too surprisingly. It's not as extreme as I thought). And he would still be relatively tiny compaired to them, because a pterosaur is not built for mass.
So, whether or not you agree with my realworld estimates on the autobot cars, the dinobots would still be friggin MASSIVE. The only way for them to not be, is to undersize their alt modes. And frankly, after you do that, then what's their point?

Doesn't really bother me to be honest. Neither the Marvel Comic or the Sunbow cartoon really bothered to keep things the same relative size from issues/scene to scene that much, and the various toys are nonsensical if you try to square up what size their alt-modes should be relative to others. If the creators of the relative media don't care then I see no reason I should. I save that sort of thing for franchises where things have defined and consistent sizes - only they get a glare when they suddenly go inconsistent - Macross, I'm looking at you with Kamjin suddenly riding on a HWR-OO-II Monster as if it was a donkey despite the Monster being significantly larger than him in every single appearance.
But something as loose and "eh whatever" about these things as Transformers? Nah, doesn't bother me.

I like figures to be in roughly the same proportions that they are in the media- Beast Machines almost got this right among its Maximals, but for Silverbolt being a smout, Rattrap being massive and Nightscream being humungous. Basically (Blast Punch) Optimus, Blackarachnia and (mega) Cheetor were fine. I felt that Silverbolt should have been the ultra, Nightscream the mega (if not deluxe) and Rattrap the basic.
Among the new CHUG additions to the Lost Light crew, Brainstorm is noticeably taller than Whirl and Cyclonus and the new Megatron is a head taller than Ultra Magnus, but it's not a big deal. Blaster being the size of Superion back in the day? That would have been a big deal. On my living room floor, Blaster would only have hung out with characters like Ultra Magnus, Scorponok and Astro Magnum. I needed the Action Master to hang out with his minibot chums from Cybertron, along with Mainframe standing in for Perceptor.
