As part of an effort to tidy up and make room for incoming toys I'm facing one of those evenings we all have to where I'm going to spend it transforming a load of toys into vehicle mode to make them fit in the box better.
Should anyone want to help you know where I live....

I have no such problems . My collection philosophy is only one version of each G1 character . I have only broken this with Starscream, Grimlock, Prowl, the Combaticons, Megatron , Optimus Prime and the entire new RiD 2015 line...but other than that...
Though I may sell off my mainly FOC doubles.

Should anyone want to help you know where I live.... I think I'm busy doing stuff that evening. I'm out of storage as well so I burst the seal on half my collection that was still MIB and the other half will need to wait until I get more storage sorted after Christmas. Although I finally sorted my Armada Unicrons out. The planet mode is amazing, apart from 1 or 2 flaws, but it's massive. He's not getting moved though, he has an Armada and an Energon Unicron in bot mode as bodyguards.

Should anyone want to help you know where I live.... I gave up after 3 hours but by that point I had most of the land vehicles in vehicle mode and forming a layer that completely covered the bottom of the box/tray they live in. Many, Generations Wheeljack, RTS Tracks, RTS Jazz were much harder than I expected them to be. On the other hand I transformed Generations Kup, previously a right bugger, faster than I ever had before. Long nosed pliers to help tease out the sides of his bonnet are useful. A few things, the Generations BW and RiD, got moved to other boxes but enough space was made to add both leader Megatrons and Leader Jetfire to the box.

I have a new dilemma though...... Packaging, to keep or not to keep, that is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of a lesser potential sell on value. Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing leave you with a lack of space thanks to all the empty boxes. I favour keeping boxes but not opened blister packs. But that is why my loft is full of boxes full of boxes. It isn't just the resale value to me because I don't envisage selling many figures on, but to me a figure isn't complete without its box. Packaging is an art in itself. I suppose it comes down to space.

I don't plan on selling mine, will eventually be passed down to my son to do with as he wishes, and I'm with you on a figure only being complete with the box. (and instructions)
We have underbed storage, I think I'll go with keeping the boxes for now.

I certainly would for MPs.
I wish I had the boxes for my G1 figures. All I kept were the tech specs. I didn't learn that fast enough. I think I've got card backs for Beast Wars, but RiD onwards I've got everything. Anything not on display is packed in its box if it had one.

Ta Phil, I thought there was a thread for this.
What would be better you know is if the Takara MP packaging had windows. Their Generations boxes are much better for displaying the actual toy. There are some truly awesome third party boxes that Takara could learn from in terms of presentation. If it's a premium toy give it a collector grade box.
And some things should be kept no matter what, like presentation gift packaging or packaging for sets.

I'm an all or nothing kind of guy so I'll keep most of it for now, even blister packs. Most of the blister packs I have are small and non-generic, the exceptions being some Godzilla and Predator figures which are bog standard and uninteresting, so they're nice to keep a hold of.
I might have to put a figure value on it. e.g. £10 or less and the packaging gets binned.

Totally agree. The MP packaging isn't bad, but combine it with the TFC Reissue packaging and that would be something special. The UW box sets aren't bad, with the flap and window. Those limited edition Universe releases (Dragstrip et al.) had very nice boxes.

Ta Phil, I thought there was a thread for this. There is a thread for everything and everything has a thread. Including The Spanking Nuns Go To Thailand. We're facing a bit of a storage crisis here. My mobility is limiting my trips to the loft to as few as possible. The Christmas decorations only got back up there cos Nick came to visit a few weekends back. Thanks Nick! Anyway I'm facing not being able to store my packaging. and potentially not having room for too many more toys. This has been poked by looking at the box of 6 CW Combiners and thinking "Where am I going to put the next ten?" And that's before we get to Titan Wars.... I suspect the G2 versions may have to go live in their boxes in the loft out of reach. TBH there's a bit of me that regrets ordering them but they are so so nice ..... I think my MP will get boxed up to save some space. Sorry Star Saber, Blue Bluestreak and Angry Bot, who I guess might be a bit angry about this. Of the rest of the cupboard above the stairs PM Op and Encore Devastator could go in there boxes too, and Universe Whirl could go in the Predators box but that still leaves a few loose items in there and nowhere near enough room for Unite Devastator let alone Titans Fort Max or even rehoming the CW Combiners.

I should add I've got carrier bags FULL of back cards going back to G2! Loads of stuff I no longer have to toys for!
I keep boxes too and there's a few boxes upstairs (RTS Lugnut springs to mind, Universe Magna Stampede & Stockade) that I no longer have the toys for!

Done. Star Saber was a bugger to get back in. What's worse is it hasn't made that much space!

I have reached maximum box mountain in my nerd room again, it is time to put them in the loft at the barn. But it looks like I am going to have to box up my TF:Prime stuff, that will free up 4 boxes in the Kallax for more stuff I don't need!

I've been doing this today as a result of yesterday's tidy.
How the flipping chipmunks do you get Metroplex's arm back off? I've had the fear for a while he needs to go away because I do not want him to yellow, but the bugger won't go back in his box!

I am of the same opinion. I've discovered that although he won't fit his own box, he fits very well in the box he arrived from amazon in with a roll of big-bubble bubble wrap around him.
I love him. He is awesome. If Fort Max is an improved version two... What's even better than awesome?

Because there were a rather large number of combined robot boxes in the bedroom I mad a trip up the first two rungs of the ladder to shove em in the loft.
F*** that was scary. Really can't do that any more.
I require chaps to visit soon and put them in the correct place!

Straight-up open and dump the packaging. I enjoy the artwork etc but definitely don't want those clogging up the house. I have enough plastic robots for that task.

Although I *will* soon re-adhere to my previous behaviour of dumping most packaging, I find myself now glad that I've not gotten around to dumping boxes from the last year or so, since I find myself moving in the near future. They will be useful for that.

Packaging rules - roughly:
Re-Issues/Masterpiece - keep. Movie - chuck Classics/Generations - keep card/tech spec RiD/Animated stuff - Chuck unless there is tech spec

For the first time since I started collecting a year ago I've got to the stage where it's all a bit muddled and there's stuff from way back at the beginning sitting still unopened, I've also got a lot of shelf space I don't think I'm utilising. So with TR about to drop and 2 days to myself I thought it was time to get it in order.
So what's the best way to do it? Strip everything off the shelves and start clean? Go shelf by shelf so there's not too much to be done at any one time?

Step 1 is decide where you want everything to go, then my personal approach is clear the first shelf, and move what you want to that one, then repeat

Depends on space I think. I'm limited on space at the moment (pending moving my study into the larger front bedroom) so I rotate smaller displays on the shelves I have.
Look at the space you've got, look at the toys you've got, look for themes or groups and fit them in the space you have. If there are too many, give it six months then swap them over.
Example: I've just packed up all my Generations Wreckers in the hope TR gives us the Jumpstarters at some point so I can get them back out and have a near complete team. In their place I decided to celebrate the movie anniversary and got all the G1 movie wave out.
