I suspect the HDD in my PC may be on the way out.
Anyone got any experience of cloning their HDD to a solid state drive?
Much improvement? Easy to do?

Are you talking just operating system or data too? SSD is usually just the OS because system drives still aren't that big compared to normal hard drives.
I'd be inclined to do a clean install on a new ssd for just the OS and then copy the data from the old HD to a new one. That's what my setup is. 128 ssd for OS and a few terabytes on networked HDs for everything else.
The difference in speed is very noticeable using an ssd. I was blown away by how fast windows/software runs when I got mine.

I have no idea what any of this means.

In your computer everything is stored on a disc than spins round, makes a noise, get hot (and needs cooling) and is eventually liable to die. This is a Hard Disk Drive, or HDD
In your phone & ipad everything is stored on what's more like microchips: they don't move, they don't make a noise, they don't get hot, they last longer and are faster. This is a Solid State Drive, or SSD
You can now SSD's large enough to make it worthwhile putting in PCs. This means your pc is faster, cooler & quieter and likely to last longer.
(to anyone tech minded: please excuse simplifications for Ralph)

Oh I understand it now. You explain tech better than Andu.

After some difficulty one of the SSDs is finally in. It's temporarily running XP cos I wrecked the mbr on my vista hdd, but programs are starting phenomenally fast, literally you can't see the title screen for the office programs!
And a PC shouldn't be this quiet!
Copy of Win7 arriving tomorrow.

SSD in running a much more palatable win 7.
Fabulous. Wish I'd done this ages ago. Can run flash without the harddriove grinding away.
Now for a couple more SSDs for my data stores.
EDIT: or maybe just one: you can get 240gb ssds for £60 on eBay.
Anyway hopefully the laptop can go off to be cloned while I'm away this week.

Went to shut desktop down. Discovered 230 updates queued up!
To be fair it's rattling through them VERY quickly, another testimony to the speed of SSDs
