Yup, the lower arms, lower leg backs and the feet are the same. Lots of the rest are new.
No gun,does he have one?

There are too many differences in these two to make sense. And I mean fundamental important differences, such as the hips and entire shape of the full torso have compketely different proportions (even accounting the squashed mature of the max image). There are SO many differences, that it seems contrary to remold. The pieces you mention are amongst the many new ones changed to look like Max. The arms and the feet still look the same. Also to date, hasbro has never really changed a transformation alt mode scheme on this level. This kind of "alternate alt mode" is much more fanwank territory, like the CW Ultra Magnus "base mode." Generations Sandstorm. CW Air Raid. CW First Aid. CW Swindle. What's shown in that picture is achievable with Metroplex. Won't look so good but you can do it. And from what's shown you can see how to get to his battle station/ship mode easy enough. All of those examples are pretty superficial changes, and do not fundamentally alter the way the toy transforms. This is more like that fanwanked base mode from CW Magnus. Or that "scorpion" mode from Hotspot. The only time hasbro or takara has come close to this level of rekajiggering was adding the four new alt modes to Devil Gigatron from normal Gigatron.

Well, that's better... but not more better enough. I can't see myself wanting it yet.

I'm... interested....
Maybe it's due to Pinwig's Headmasters cartoon DVD he sent me... there's something about a giant flying Fort Max...

Well, that's better... but not more better enough. I can't see myself wanting it yet. Then clearly you're dead inside. Or never read the original Headmasters mini-series at the time of printing. It's beautiful! And more-so at the correct ratio! (Disclaimer: You are, of course, under no obligation to worship Fortress Maximus. But you should. ;-) )

I... I prefer the IDW iteration. That's the toy I want. If this huge Fort Max had the tank treads I would look more kindly on him.

Yeah. Fair point. I was excited by the tank treads also.
On the other hand, I already have Perfect Effect Guardian, which has more than enough tank treads.
Also, I have Brave Max. And Kabaya Max. And Max Jr. So... what do I *actually* want from a Fortress Maximus..?
Er...
I want another cider. Yes. That'll help.

It's actually making me want to get the encore G1 version instead. I'm not sure I can draw any conclusions from that image, but it does remind me I've never had the original.

Well, it's only a drawing. Not representative of what the toy may actually look like. (Machine Wars Prime - I'm looking at you!)
But, er, what's happening on Sunday?

God, I was planning on getting married this year as well. I might need to work a bit harder to pay for it all.

Two weeks... TWO WEEKS!
We'd better see more of this in two weeks' time, anyway.
As for the lack of IDW treads... disappointing. But I guess that means I won't be throwing out Perfect Effect Guardian any time soon.
