This thought has occured to me recently. Why where so many Superheroes designed with their pants on the OUTSIDE? Seems very strange to me. Superman, Wolverine, Cyclops the list goes on. Even when they're same colour as the rest of their outfit they still have the OUTLINE of the underpants! ie DareDevil. It's mad! Thankfully the modern movies have adressed this. But the curiousity remains in comics, toys and cartoons. I wonder why these characters were ever designed like this. Underpants on the inside people! It's a great mystery of our times.

Super-powers can have unexpected side-effects, such as explosive incontinence. Having an extra pair of pants on the outside can help obscure any embarrasing stains.

Maybe because the trunks look is associated with musclemen, wrestlers and so forth.

Also possibly because a fair number of them wear tights, which tend to leave the man-bits on conspicuous display if they are not covered up by a further layer.

Indeed, I don't think yellow and blue spandex, lycra or nylon would really flatter the nether regions.
Not that I'd know for sure, I've never tried it.

I like to think I'm open minded, but not THAT open minded! There are some things that are just better off left to the imagination.
Or not.

Reminds me of the old Bodyform adverts that used to be on in the '80's. I can just imagine the big-lunged singer warbling....

They're circus performers. Batman and Robin are a trapeze act. Superman is a strongman. Captain America is a rodeo clown, racing around on a motorcycle in a brightly coloured protective outfit. Namor is the high-dive act. Human Torch is the human cannonball (with a twist). Robin, Bucky and Toro are the next generation learning the performance so they can carry on when their teachers are too old.
Circuses were hugely popular children's entertainment in the pre-television days when these characters were created. These gymnasts and stunt performers were the superheroes of the day, and the comic heroes emulated their look. Hell, Dick Grayson and Hawkeye *were* an acrobat and a rodeo clown respectively. That was their official origins.

Why do some Transformers appear to be wearing underpants? Some even have underpants-shaped stickers to apply.

Well, I mean Prowl looks like he's wearing black underpants/overpants, doesn't he? And what are these if not the robotic equivalent of superhero pants? Devastator: Menasor: They're not connecting pieces required to make the combination work. Purely decorative/protective. Martin

Brilliant Martin! Of course! It's obvious now! But as Jazz demonstrates in Dinobot Hunt they're very functional overpants. With storage options.

In 'Dinobot Hut' Jazz is seen pulling his flamethrower out of his... pant pocket, and it is a full-size weapon.
