Martin's post in the Titans thread got me thinking: In the Marvel comics, the Dinobots fight Trypticon. The Metroplex of Space Pirates would step on tiny Trypticon and that would be the end of him - he has no-one in his size class. The only giant character Devastator fights is Superion, in the G.I. Joe crossover. Martin What are the G1 toy rivalries? I mean some are obvious: Superion vs Menasor Defensor vs Bruticus Computron vs Abomninus Metroplex vs Trypticon (unless you live in the UK!) Fortress Maximus vs Scorponok (again, unless you live in the UK, in which case Metroplex fights Scorponok) But who do the Dinobots fight? The Insecticons, cos they came out in 85 and are animals or the Predacons? Does Powermaster Prime fight Piranacon? Or the missing Overlord? Does Devastator fight Omega Supreme? Or the similarly Diaclone origined Trainbots/Raiden?

If you go by the UK toy leaflets, you'd probably say Jumpstarters vs Blitzwing and Astrotrain, Dinobots vs Insecticons, Throttlebots vs Duocons, Metroplex vs Scorponok, Pirranacon vs Quickswitch, PM Prime vs Doubledealer, etc., but it quickly breaks down because there are usually more Autobots. Starscream, Skywarp and Thundercracker have to fight eleven, and the Decepticon Micromasters and Action-Masters are vastly outnumbered. Who is Galvatron's opposite number, Magnus or Rodimus? In the UK, who is Jetfire's? And spare a thought for poor Ratbat. How many Mini-Autobots would he have to fight at once if he were an official UK release?
In the world of stories, of course, whoever's present on one side will fight whoever's present on the other side, or run away. In the comic, the Dinobots fought Shockwave, Megatron, Galvatron, Trypticon, the Constructicons and the Predacons, but only fought Devastator in the Movie adaptation. The only confirmed rivalry was between Swoop and Divebomb. The only character Pirranacon fought was Galvatron. Metroplex had no opposite number. Sky Lynx fought Predaking in the cartoon and could be seen as his US toy line opposite number, but they never met in the comic. In Masterforce, Ginrai fought every Decepticon. Who was his opposite number? Pirranacon? Sixknight? Dreadwing? Overlord? Black Zarak?
Motormaster apparently has a rivalry with Optimus Prime, though I'm not sure Prime's aware of it.
Argh.

I've been largely opposed to most of these imposed assumed rivalries. All rivalries are open to interpretation, based exclusively on the fiction one reads/watches.
I think Counterpart is a significantly more accurate term for things that fans usually refer to as rivalries. Hasbro/Takara often released Autobot and Decepticon versions of a gimmick or character to even things out.
Even though he never got a good world release, Overlord is most definately the counterpart to Optimus. Bith are powermasters, both are the big opposing toy of their year. But no one ever considers them rivals.
The Autobot Triplechangers are definitely the counterpart to the earlier decepticon triplechangers, though in 30+ years of fiction, the two groups almost never encounter one another. So, rivals doesn't apply.
Scorponok and Fort Max are the counterparts of each other, though the toys are so dramatically unsynced they don't work. And like the triplechangers, they have very rarely met in 30 years of fiction.
Though if you want to see the concept of rivals in a really effed up perspective, look no further than Shattered Glass, and their "Rival Deco" gimmick. FP thinks Cyclonus is Hotrod's rival? Trypiticon is Grimlocks? Jetfire is Starscream's? Really? This may be the biggest turnoff of SG for me.

In my head the Dinobots always square up to Shockwave. Although having watched Heavy Metal War again for next Sunday's Sunbow thread it has reminded me what an awesome match up the Dinos are with Devastator. If only Hasbro could give us some Generations Dinos to go with Titan Devastator. Mind you, a decent Shockwave wouldn't go amiss either.

Great thread. One rivalry I'm particularly interested in, which has never been looked into in any media I'm aware of, other than 6" Titanium Prowl's bio, is Prowl vs Shockwave. The war of the master strategists!

Well, according to IDW, Shockwave completely trumps Prowl, as I think it was Shockwave who brainwashed and enslaved Prowl.

Can we go cross lines on characters who have never met? With the talk of Prowl & Shockwave - could they go up against some Beast Machines characters?

Although on the toy front, you could already argue that Prowl's already had his Masterpiece and Combiner Wars toys released, which thus makes him better. But on the flip side, you can't rush perfection...

I think we might have to go to tech specs to see who is better Shockwave / Prowl. If we go comic time - then Prowl wins. If master plans - Shockwave just wins due to all the Dinobots stuff. But which toy you'd have more fun playing with - Prowl.

Every time Shockwave shows up, Megatron gets his ass kicked. Every time Prowl shows up, a desk gets flipped. But which of those actually presents a threat to every day life? I need a desk to work on, and so do thousands of others! Clearly Prowl is the most dangerous! That was the question, wasn't it..?

One rivalry I'm particularly interested in, which has never been looked into in any media I'm aware of, other than 6" Titanium Prowl's bio, is Prowl vs Shockwave. The war of the master strategists! Now I don't really see the Marvel versions of Prowl and Shockwave actually bothering about rivalries. Both of them tend to be depicted as "big picture" strategists so I can see them trying to outthink each other, but only on a "I've a war to win" level, I can't really see them personalising it. (IDW Prowl ala Roberts I can see personalising it but denying it vehmently -but the I hear his "voice" as LFN's Operations so goes with the territory.) Sunbow Shockwave I am unsure has an Ego even in the psychoanalytic sense, let alone the colloquial .Obviously, in the Marvel comic you have Divebomb vs Diveb..er Swoop. But that is less a rivalry than Swoop doing his nut that Divebomb won't let it drop that he won... Karl
