You can pick up to three, and I've avoided folks who have just done fill-in issues here and there and went for regular/semi-regular pencillers.

3) Frank Quitely
2) John Byrne
1) Paul Smith
Easy!
Bellow that would be JRjr, LaRocca, before he started tracing, Joe Mad, Jim Lee and Portacio (who did better work on X-Factor) in some order. Adams only ever did the annuals, though they were storming. Did Alan Davis ever have a decent run on X-Men? Not sure.

Done this before on here, not in any order my top 5 was Quitely, Steranko, Cassady, Joe Mad and Adams, with no Cassady on the list I'll drop Steranko, leaving Quitely, Mad and Adams.

I'd forgotten about Cassady! Oops, but that's a bit of an indictment of the Astonishing X-Men run, which was pretty to look at but I think lacked a bit of substance.

I remember being really angry at spending money on the first trade of that but it took less than 10 minutes to read. Fuck all reading in it.

What, no..? Fair doos, you are leaving off folk who only did a little bit here and there so folk like Walt wouldn't make the list. Given that I'd have to go for:-
1)Paul Smith 2) Alan Davis 3) John Byrne

Going on what I've seen of their X-Men work rather than their work generally as artists (otherwise Steranko would own this list, obvs):
1. John Byrne 2. Neal Adams 3. Chris Bachalo
Bachalo is probably the only one who needs much justification - I love his style, loved it back in the 90s and have enjoyed watching it mature. He sometimes lapses into incoherent storytelling, but even then it's usually interesting to look at. He's a great designer too.

Plus he smacked Bob Kane, which makes him a hero.
