Which form is best for a Transformers toy?
Land based - Optimus etc & most beast characters are land based too Air based - jets & some beasts Sea based - Seaspray, Broadside, Seawatch too name a few & some beasts (Seacons & Octopunch)
This is mainly toy based - because we have the toy to play with but if anyone wants to include comic only charcaters in the list.

Well land because it can remain in an action pose without any support (other than the ground). A Flying vehicle only really looks good when being whizzed around in the air. Likewise a sea vehicle looks run aground unless you are imagining the carpet is water.

Sea because Seaspray is the best.

Land and air. Astrotrain, blitzwing, apeface, snapdragon, optimal optimus.
Seaspray as a hovercraft can also do land.
RiD Galvatron pretty much covers all bases.
Unicron probably has a thin atmosphere around him. Thus he *is* land and air.

In Aligned, Unicron is Earth, so thick atmosphere, lots of dirt, and vast oceans.

For toys - land, because toys can stand and roll but they don't float or stay up in the air.
In stories - depends what planet they're on. On Earth, where the stuff is on land, then land disguises are best. (Aircraft off flight paths do not blend in.) On a planet where the civilisation is water-based - water!
Least practical alien disguise vehicle mode - train, because you can only go where the tracks are, and provided there's no-one else on the line and the points take you where you want to go.
And the award for most stupid configuration goes to Unicron for having a walking mode and no floor in the universe big enough for him to walk on.

Air. I know that it's not practical to pose air-based toys, but I do like running round my house going "wheeeeeeeeee!" with aerial 'bots. In fact, until I got the CW Autobot cars last year, the vast majority of my purchases had air-based alt-modes...
