After a few months of thinking about buying this recent two-disc edition I finally went out and picked it up yesterday - and now wished I hadn't. The Special Features on it are terrible and it makes you wonder how Metrodome got away with it. The interview with Flint Dille is blurred and slightly out of focus as is the Peter Cullen Q&A, the colours in the Scramble City episode are all washed out and you find yourself watching a Transformers cartoon with an orange coloured Optimus Prime in it and the deleted and alternate scenes are just clips from the film but without the flashy laser beam colouring.
If anyone hasn't got this DVD yet my advice is don't bother.

Heh - welcome to the world of Metrodome. Bunch of useless twats. The R1 Sony special edition DVD is the animated dvd of choice.
Much, much better product.

Don't get me started on the Scramble City subtitles!
I bought the Ultimate not long after it was released and still haven't got around to watching the extras, other than Scramble City.

The Scramble City subtitles must be some sort of joke because the Transformers call each other 'bastards' twice.

I have not seen the Metrodome version, but I do have the Sony release and highly recommend it.

The Scramble City subtitles must be some sort of joke because the Transformers call each other 'bastards' twice. They do that in the subs of Zone as well I think. (The scene where the yellow micromaster car throws a grenade at trypticon).

It was the dreadful grammar in the Scramble City subtitles that annoyed me: possessive and plural forms mixed up, seemingly at random, making the subtitles almost unreadable. What made it worse was that this was in an ostensibly children's DVD where there would seem an inherent duty to promote literacy.

I watched the movie with Chris McFeeley's commentary last night. It was informative that's for sure but the biggest problem with it was that he mentioned in certain parts about 'this line coming up' or 'this song now playing' when Metrodome had completly muted the movie sound for the commentary track so you hadn't got a clue what line or song Chris was talking about.

It's much the same as on the "Victory" and "Masterforce" commentaries. It is what comes of putting the commentary on an isolated audio track unfortunately. (Something I can't think of any other company that does off the top of my head)

The only other time I've noticed this is on the commentary track for the TV mini 'The Second Coming'.

Oh, BTW, if anyone just wants a viewing copy, Poundland curently has piles of ye olde TF:TM budget release for, naturally, a pound. Beside the GI: Joe The Movie DVD's! FOPP has the vanilla Metrodome 'Ultimate' W/S release at £3.

Some random thing I have noticed and would like to query.
Why is it in this day and age, where nearly every dvd has them, has no version of TFTM been released with subtitles?

There is now a large pile of the 1-disc edition in FOPP marked down to one Earth pound. 'Please take them away' sign not included. Nearby is the full series of Inhumanoids for three quid. RarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrlllllrrraaaaaa.

And there's me not likely to get to Fopp anytime soon. Oh well.
I must get around to watching the extras on the Ultimate one of these days. And the live action film extras, for that matter.

Well the 2-disc version was down to a pound and I need an R2 copy of the film so I gave it a punt at that price (laptop can't play the spiffy Sony R1 release). Only watched Scramble City so far. I laughed and laughed and laughed. I've never seen such poor picture quality on a DVD. What an Earth were Metrodome thinking?
Still, I got a copy of the movie I can watch on my laptop for a quid so I'm not bothered. Had I paid the £20 RRP...

The Scramble City: Piss-poor subtitle edition on the ultimate edition is the same as the bootleg that's been on eBay (with Zone) for years. Still better than the Sony effort though which neglected to include any subtitles at all - or for that matter audio.

Sony couldn't get the rights clearance for the audio track unfortunately and I think timing issues meant subtitles were out.
So Metrodome just ganked some bootleg material - that wouldn't surprise me in the least given their fucking shoddy work.

It had an audio commentary track in it's place with some knowledgeable fans explaining the whole thing and giving their opinion and insight. Not as bad as it sounds, I generally am not a fan of fan commentaries but the chaps who did the Sony version were interesting and engaging (and far better than the main commentary with Flint Dille, Susan Blu and Nelson Shin).

I wondered why that DVD was reduced to £1.99 on Play last year. I did'nt get it since I have that Reconstructed version that was released some time back.

What made it worse was that this was in an ostensibly children's DVD where there would seem an inherent duty to promote literacy. It's the bootleg that's been doing the rounds for years and has the subtitles burned in: they were not produced for the DVD. I recognised them straight away. Oh well. The 4:3 version of the movie is not at all remastered. The cropped widescreen version looks quite nice though: very bright and clear. Don't have the R1 Sony release to hand for comparison but it looks fine. Commentary track is breezy enough. For a pound I'm happy enough. I'm not going to complain for a quid! -Ralph
