Where is Thunderbird 3? Hmm? Toy shops have 1 and 2 in abundance, flowing out the doors, but I haven't seen a 3 since the first week those toys came out. I am INCOMPLETE!

Back when the new Tracy Island Thunderbirds set came out I told myself I'd buy one if I ever saw one on clearance because £80 was too much. I just went into Tesco for some tomatoes and came out with a Tracy Island instead - for £30! So now all my vehicles have a home.
Incidentally, Tesco also seem to be clearancing the Supersize TB2 I've been bleating about for the last few days. That started at £40 in TRU and Tesco are selling them now for £12.50. £12.50 is a brilliant price for that toy if you have any interest in Thunderbirds.
Or stickers.

Sudden discovery of missing ingredient required swift action to save tea. Shopping had been done the day before. I am ridiculously excited about the prospect of unboxing this beast. It will happen tonight. I've gorged on Star Wars stickers and am now headed for Thunderbird heaven. Life is good.
Have you seen videos of this new playset? It actually launches TB1 and 3 using rising electric platforms. Flashing lights, the lot. I just have no idea where I'm going to put it.

Look away Doctor. So 46 stickers to add to Tracy Island during the building of it, oddly in increasing difficulty to apply. I love a challenge but I've been sorely tested tonight. You see the windows in the circular tower TB3 is poking out of up the top? That is one sticker that goes right round the circumference. Because it goes on an angled surface and is wider at the front than the back it is very hard to get it on straight. It nearly beat me. The set itself is in about a dozen pieces too that all fit together in sequence. The box said 45 minutes to build it, took more like 90. But immensely enjoyable. The lights and sounds features are great. Doors make noises when they open and close, the character voices tell you what they're doing and the ships get the proper countdown and blast off noises when they take off. Terrific stuff.

I don't care for Thunderbirds but I'm a sucker for a cool playset, especially one that's as big and fun looking as that. The plastic does look, well, a bit cheap. Does it feel sturdy enough?

It's pretty study once it's put together. All the pieces that make the base snap together and hold fast, and the rock face is made out of four interlocking pieces of bendable rubbery plastic which is pretty heavy and once the tabs are together does hold well, although I have one corner that won't sit where it's supposed to.
It doesn't feel cheap to me, but the finish is of toy quality rather than collectable. I'd never have paid the full asking price. I'm sure it was £80 or so in TRU, but for £30 on clearance it's a bargain if you're into Thunderbirds. The footprint is about 17x22 inches, and it's 16 inches tall at the highest point.
You have to factor in the fact that the island playset is just that - the vehicles are sold separately. You can get them all in a multipack for £22 off Amazon. This youtube video does a good job of showing the play features, just skip the middle bit with the watch. I thought initially it was a controller but I think it's just a push a button to make a noise thing.

That's what I meant, not cheap but it looks like the finish of a child's toy. Which would be right as that's what it is.
It looks pretty good in that video. £50 in total is very reasonable for a set that does as much as that does and 5 good size vehicles.

The individual vehicles all have actions and sounds too - apart from TB4 which is too small. There isn't a TB5. In fact oddly TB5 seems to be moulded into the cavern wall above TB2's exit door. Why they did that I've no idea. Also Brains' lab on the side is built more to the scale of the action figures, which are 3 3/4 inch I think.

ASDA had wee die-cast TB vehicles today for £5 and something based on the new show. They look decent. I almost bought a TB2.

Ooh, nice. Was the new something black and like a squashed TB3? that's Thunderbird Shadow, the ship flown by Kayo (the suped up version of TinTin this show has).

Well this is a bag of spanners and no mistake. I've just discovered that toy shops here are now stocking the expansion kit for the Supersize TB2 which allows you to build some of the vehicles that go in the pods: Which is all fine and dandy, except compared to the Japanese release it's not only missing the components to build the elevator car, but also the special fold out pod that the blinking things go in! Why take half the kit out to sell it over here? That's crap!

Supersize Thunderbird 3 with lights, sounds and SMOKE EFFECT!!! £50 though. But given how heavily discounted the first wave toys were after Christmas I shall be having that to go with my big TB2 at some point. Look! it can even shake hands! And pretend to be a Tripod! what more could you want!

I have now stickered Supersize TB3, which as expected is discounted just as heavily as TB2 was last year. £50 down to £16.99 in Tesco and Smyths and on Amazon. I haven't yet got the smoke effect working as it requires filling a tank with distilled water, so I need to make some.
I also now have both the European and Japanese versions of the TB2 pod kit, and they are very different beasts. They work in the same way with a core cockpit that has a variety of different pieces that can be attached to make different pod vehicles, but they're both on different scales.
Having derided the European version for having fewer pieces, it's the right size, and has sound effects for the different vehicles you can make. The Japanese version has the benefit of coming with an actual green pod that slots into TB2, and the bits to make the elevator car the Euro one can't, but the vehicles are much smaller.
