We have other thread about which is the best toy last year or top 5 toys ever.
But what is the best toys for each year - either a surprise figure that was released & unexpected (so thats goign back to pre internet days so no leaks). leaked toy details for a toy released the following year don't count ie Titan returns line would count for 2016 but not for 2015. This is going back all the way to 1984 too - when most people may not have seen most of the original lines (some of us might have with those Megatron guns & Jetfire imports during the 80's)
Best toy, surprise figure, toys with the best transformation - or hiding weapons body parts. Some years are going to be restricted to certain lines. ie Beast era, Armada

1984 - Optimus Prime (great mix of posability and gimmicks and fun relative to the rest) 985 - Devastator because he was six robots in one. 1986 - Galvatron because of the amazing posability lights and sounds and excellent transformation (again relative to everyone else) 1987 - Fortress Maximus - because of size and interactive playability. 1988 - Sixshot because he's six modes.
It's complicated later because in the European /US line you got craption masters or re-issues. So let's go from G2...
199whatever Laserrod Optimus Prime - for being big and not a repaint or remould...and poseable. 1996 -2000 the BW introduced a new standard of sculpt and posability and were standardized. All of them were relatively equally good toys. Beast Machines too.
2001 - SuperFire Convoy: the only actual new mode. Everything else was a repaint. JRX and Buildking excluded and Gigatron...hmm...some tough competition there!
2002---the Abyss of Unicrob Trilogy...where Unicron was the best toy.
2007---the abyss of movie toys...where ROTF Prime was the best (although also very hard to TF)
2000something when Animated came out. It was like Rescue bots before Rescue bots. Not really TF proper . ...
2000something else with Prime and Beast Hunters...tough call . I never had many of those . I like deluxe Starscream but have little experience with the toyline.
Combiner Wars are all excellent . First line since BW where I feel completist impulses, though way leas original modes.
RID2 . ..uhh...I have most of the Autobots but these are hard to judge because...all the Warriors are good.
