There's a rather good 'special edition' DVD release of this in HMV for a bargain £3. I highly recommend it. A childhood favourite in the Burns household, but even more enjoyable when properly restored and in the original aspect ratio. It's hard to believe this film is 40 years old. It looks and sounds very modern.
Decent extras on the second disc. The 2-hour documentary from 1998 covering the Apes films is a decent watch and the best we'll get considering many of the folk who made the films have since passed away. Also fascinating to see the original 10-minute promo used to sell the idea to studios from one of the Rod Sterling drafts. Would have been a very different, but still decent, film.
There's some audio commentary tracks I haven't got through yet.
Worth picking up for fans of intelligent and startling movie-making, especially at that price.

It's a classic film no doubt about it and even more remembered now since the recent passing of Charlton Heston. I don't think I'll bother getting that disc though because I have the Special Edition DVD boxset and that's good enough for me.

I wasn't planning on picking up any more DVD's until I had worked my way through my current pile of unwatched stuff. But at £3 it would be worthwhile picking that up and adding it to the pile.

There are 2 audio commentaries : one with Jerry Goldsmith, the other with a few of the actors and the make-up designer John Chambers and a text commentary. As some of these are now deceased, I imagine they were in the can for a while.
I must say, watching the movie in the original aspect ratio makes an enormous difference to the look and feel of the piece, in particularly the opening act where the astronauts trek through the Forbidden Zone. The way they are framed in the picture really brings out their isolation and the alienness of their environment.

Apes mania continues apace in Burns Towers. Via *cough* other means I am making my way through the other films, which I recall loving when I was a kidult. Especially BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES.
Re-watched that this evening. It...it hasn't aged well. Oh dear.

Just you wait until you watch Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Your brain will be screaming at you to turn it off.

I have that to look forward to tomorrow. Then 'Battle', then...The Other Apes Film.
'Escape' picked up in the back half and had a decent final reel but ultimately was very dated and flat. Except when The Ricardo Montalban was on screen.

I am dying inside as I watch CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, or if you prefer CONQUEST OF A SMALL HOUSING SCHEME.
Nnngh. Not even The Montalban can save this.

The original is indeed fantastic and was even better than I remembered. The sequels, alas, have thus far not matched up my memories, though I give them points for at least trying to be creative and some decent ideas. They just don't hold up to adult eyes though.
You never know, maybe 'Battle' will prove otherwise...

Are you going to bother with the TV series - that's much better than the last two films put together (last three films if you count Tim Burton's 'A Nightmare Before The Film Even Gets To The Halfway Mark').

Are you going to bother with the TV series - that's much better than the last two films put together (last three films if you count Tim Burton's 'A Nightmare Before The Film Even Gets To The Halfway Mark'). I remember seeing a couple of episodes of the TV series when it was repeated on Channel Four a few years ago. I do feel it is one of these things that hasn't aged well. But then, I feel that "Planet of the Apes" is a film that doesn't really brook sequels or remakes - it made its point effectively and capably and was done, what more was there to be said? Karl

I am swithering about whether to re-watch the live-action TV show. I wonder if it should remain a fond memory. I'd hate it to disapoint the way some of the sequel movies did.

Well, I thought I would re-appraise the 2001 film. Perhaps it had aged well. Alas, no. I lasted 30 minutes before hitting the 'delete' button. Pointless generic outer space movie.

The 2001 movie was just terrible. Mark Wahlberg was an awful hero and the ending of the film was an insult to anybody watching it.

I see that the 1968 film is back on sale in HMV again for £3. How many of them did they make? I still recommend picking one up.
Also, huge piles of the 5-film set for £7 with a desperate air of 'please take them away' about them.

Yes, hmmmm indeed. Not entirely convinced that anything will come of this. It seems an odd thing to remake in all honesty - it isn't that well remembered except for a vague awareness that there were sequels to "Planet..".
