Reflector had always been a mystery to me. Intriguing appearances in the cartoon. Never seen in the comic. Having watched the cartoon frequently over the last couple of years, I found myself maybe perhaps kinda wanting a Masterpiecey Reflector for my Masterpiece collection maybe almost perhaps. Then not one, but two, Third Party companies brought out sets! Fanstoys look generally better, except for the faces, imo. And you can't go wrong with Fanstoys. But Maketoys were still looking very nice indeed. There really didn't appear to be much in it to decide between the sets. I just couldn't make my mind up if I actually needed a MP Sunbow style Reflector in my life, let alone which one to get! And at a hundred pounds plus, it was looking like I'd pass. Then a cheaper previously owned but still mint Visualizer on ebay UK made my mind up for me!
This is a lovely toy. Really wonderful. The plastic is top quality, so so SO much stronger and denser feeling than Masterpiece Shockwave. Denser than Masterpiece Soundwave, actually. He has weight, and substance. The three robots look superb. Great styling, great articulation, nice colours, fantastic face/head sculpts, they look like they've walked right out of the television screen. Size-wise they're half a head shorter than MP Prowl, which I find a touch too big for my Mind's eye, but it works just fine on display. I'd have perhaps prefer them to be the same height/size as, say, Brawny, chest height to your MP Autobot cars. But it's fine (and apparently cartoon accurate). Transformation has a few annoying panel folding moments, but overall isn't bad at all. And the camera is, well, it's a plastic brick shaped like a camera, but what do you expect?! It's perfectly nice, fits together well, fairly large, you know, adult's hand sized. The kids love it. He comes with a flash/missile launcher, three hand guns (that don't match and I'm not keen on their design, but a minor flaw), spare faces with different expressions on (I haven't tried them because I prefer the neutral expression faces that all look the same). He also comes with a small Reflector camera that other Masterpiece figures can hold. And, get this, he even has a metal screw-hole adapter section that fits into the bottom of the camera mode SO THAT HE CAN BE PUT ON A REAL CAMERA'S TRIPOD! Great touch.
Overall, a lovely lovely LOVELY Sunbow-tastic figure. I AM OVER THE MOON. If you're that way inclined, I highly recommend him. Reflector is odd, isn't he? He's three identical (or near identical) robots that transform into a brick-camera. But if you're nostalgic like me, then those three identical robots look fantastic on the shelf next to the other Sunbow inspired Masterpiece Decepticons. And I think Maketoys have got the style just right. Yes, he's Sunbow-tastic, but he's also got a vibe about him that he isn't just Sunbow inspired, but also inspired by a desire to do a good Reflector toy. An 'ultimate' version, if you like. Something that recent official Masterpieces aren't achieving anymore. I'd love to see a toy accurate version, but the robot modes wouldn't be right. Still might be fun for them to try it.
REFLECTOR RULES!!!
