ROM is quite simply the most awesome comic in existence. It has a Galadorian spaceknight on Earth fighting against shape-changing aliens called Dire Wraiths. He teams up with pretty much every Marvel character in the 80's. He manages to punch out a zombie woolie mammoth and does all sorts of other awesome things.
I've used the word awesome repeatedly because Rom deserves it.

Sounds cool! Wish I was a Spaceknight.
Loved the review Graham, you hit it on the head re the cast of thousands and 'clones' as you put it. Ascending would have been much much better with a simpler cast, and well, more refined story.

I highly recommend ROM.
As for The Ascending - I bailed after the first issue (so far that's two IDW efforts to have not warranted further purchasing - that and Megatron).

Evil shall never triumph so long as there is breath within the cyborg breast of ROM!
I have a few extra comics from Phil, too, to be doled out to Andy and Gavin. To ease the pain of Ascending with two-fisted Mantlo Madness.

Must get around to asking nicely if I could borrow some ROM stuff off one of the Scots folk at some future date. I've read smatterings of it here and there, but I could benefit from some more exposure to the glory that was Rom. Karl

Ralph gave me this at the weekend. I can't believe he read it twice first though. Thank goodness he gave me the sourcebooks at the same time or I wouldn't have been able to distinguish blue baboon bloke from... well other blue baboon bloke etc.

B'Boom and Apache.
Apache is what they called B'Boom in Japan in the BWII line, so they're using the same toy twice.
I think Don did some differences when drawing Apache so he looked slightly different but this doesn't work well when he's the same toy.

B'Boom and Apache. Apache is what they called B'Boom in Japan in the BWII line, so they're using the same toy twice. Hilariously the Sourcebooks are full of this - they seem to have crammed in as many of the BWII and Neo repaints as they can - leading to a large array of twins (and occasionally triplets). It isn't impossible to justify within the frame of the fiction, it is just that the end result is a little....absurd. Karl

I've been enjoying the fictional bio's in the sourcebooks far more than the comic series. I must have Beast Wars II on DVD now! Presuming that is where all the Anolgmousthing energy story was told...

Angolmois (or Angronmoa depending on which romanisation you go with) was the McGuffin of "Beast Wars Second", much as Energon was in early "Beast Wars". It also forms the McGuffin of "Beast Wars Neo" as well. Karl

I just got The Ascending from the library. Oh my GOD. The first issue starts off so well with build-up and some nice Ravage bits and a sensible Predacon plot, and then they blow it with about half a million characters - most of whom have no lines and go unnamed - running around with no proper explanation for what's going on with the baddies. But I'm glad we see Big Convoy apologising to Bump for a two-panel argument! #4 at least has some nice character bits for Op Minor, Ravage and Magmatron ("find a suitable Maximal", heh heh) and the Predacon hordes being miffed they've been dumped on Earth. But it's still naff.
