With the other Dreamwave reprints we've had/are coming I was hoping for this. It'd be nice if what was printed of Age of Wrath was included, but presumably it'll just be a straight cheap as chips representing of the previous IDW version. Which is cool.
With the Marvel reprints wrapping up (though come on Classics UK!), I guess we'll see more of the DW stuff back out there. A chunky omnibus of the first two G1 minis and another for whatever they can reprint (though I'm not sure at this stage whether the former legal issues are still a thing?)of the third would be nice.

Isn't the issue with the WW vol 3 stuff that no-one got paid, so if IDW wanted to reprint it, they'd need to pay everyone from scratch?

Yeah, due to the non-payment Dreamwave legally would not have the rights to the material.
Also there was the matter or the Bankruptcy case on Dreamwave/DreamEngine - no idea if that ever finally got resolved and if memory serves me Patyk and McDonough had some legal challenge against Dreamwave, no idea how that panned out though, and whether or not they roped anyone else in to join them.

If it was published, Hasbro own it, IDW can reprint it. I'm sure it'd come down to an ethical choice by the editorial team at IDW, who would hopefully choose not to print it if there were payment issues involved with the creators. Furman has at least made some money by selling the scripts at shows, unlikely Joe Ng has though. Unless he sold the finished issue 4 pages. Furman had photocopies of the pencils for #4 at one convention, looked great, better without the muddy colouring. And yeah, it'll be interesting to see if they ever reprint anymore of the DW stuff. An Energon omnibus was planned after the Armada one, which never appeared. I don't think the G1 ongoing has ever been reprinted, or the Summer Special and Micromasters mini. But let's get Marvel G2 first please.

I imagine publishing it without making sure everyone involved got paid would backfire horribly in reputational terms!

If Hasbro own the copyright, is there any obstacle to IDW paying the original team to finish it properly? a handful of issues isn't a huge punt for them and they'd get good press out of it.

It's odd. Usually people go mad for unreleased stuff they 'missed out on' and you'd think picking up War Within would be a no-brainer. I guess no-one really cared about vol 3. (I read the issues and uh, it's about the turbomasters vs Decepticon clone jets? Genuinely can't recall!!) Unlike the first two volumes, there was no 'zing' about it.

I don't remember now. Mine are in one of the TF comic long boxes in the archive.

Yeah, I'd say it's unlikely as it'd confuse casuals who are invested in the IDW TF universe. Also, too many TF titles in a small market is not a good idea, we'll soon have 3 ongoings, and a couple of minis still to end.

Pretty big obstacles. They would have to pay folk the going rate to write, draw, colour, letter and edit 3 new issues which significantly makes a reprint project much more expensive for something which is only going to sell in niche quantities. At least Furman put out his scripts and notes so we can know how it would have ended. -Ralph
