Thinking about the RiD thread where I said I appreciated that they were trying a different 'big' villain with Steeljaw but felt he lacked any sort of weight. Do Transformers shows need to be about Optimus Prime vs Megatron in this age where brand awareness and building on existing properties is key, or is there too much Prime and Megatron and their constant reappearance and reinvention dilutes them and makes them boring?
I mean RiD didn't have Megatron, but they shoved Megatronus in there, and Optimus Prime being DEAD didn't stop him being in it! It's like they wanted to do something new but just chickened out straight away.
In this day and age, could we have a Transformers show that DOESNT have an Optimus Prime or Megatron? Or god forbid, no Bumblebee!
(The Bumblebee thing is even stranger as aside from the name and being yellow, the last few Bumblebees couldn't have been more different!)

For young kiddies they may have no awareness that previous Primes and Megatrons existed! So I suppose from Hasbro's point of view it doesn't matter much if it is Prime v Megs every year. I suppose I don't tend to think of them as 'the big two' anyway as I grew up with Marvel UK TF (and Ladybird books) when leaders came and went. I understand that tie-in media for toys is managed differently these days though.

I don't think it needs to be the big two. When you bring them in it makes a series feel as though it's the main drive of the world's continuity. Prime always felt like 'this is the important stuff' - heavy and serious - because it focused on the primary struggle between the two factions, with world changing consequences. If every series is like that it begins to make it feel like you're only ever there at the core events.
With RiD the focus is shifted totally to a small band of Autobots completing a specific task on Earth while the big picture goes on elsewhere. Sure, Prime becomes involved, but where I am in my watching at the moment he is a hindrance to Bumblebee's team rather than a leader. The series has it's grand moments, but it feels like a microcosm separate to the 'big' stuff. I like it because of that. It's a different aspect, a different idea, and it feels much freer because of that. You get a chance to see some of the stuff going on behind the scenes, usually forgotten in the drive to present the main picture, ie what the Autobots who aren't in the command room are doing while the generals make the decisions.

I would appreciate a series that does not use them. That doesn't mean they can't exist in the series, but that they're in a major back seat. Look at Rescue Bots; Optimus only pops up once in a blue moon to say "Hey kids, buy my toy!" While Megatron isn't even a thing. And Rescue Bots is the most successful show since Animated. Which brings me to Animated. That was the last time Op and Megs were significantly reinvented and portrayed as different. Optimus Prime was young, inexperienced, and no one listened to him. Megatron was imposing and a competent villain. Last time we saw either of these types of portrayals were twenty years ago.
But without any major reinvention on the level of BW or TFA, I think I've had enough Generic Optimus and Silly Megatron to last me a few years.

I know waaaaaaaaaay too much about Spice Girls music. OPTIMUS V MEGATRON!!!!!!!!! does look like the title of a thrash metal song though.

Was Optimus Primal going to be in TransTech or was Cheetor ready to lead solo?
I'm sure a series with Star Sabre vs Deathsaurus would do well.

RID has Optimus just going round pretending to be damaged during series 2 & Steeljaw (who we can just class has Megatron) does keep coming over lame. He has the right ideas but it all comes out Waspinator (falls apart)

Was Optimus Primal going to be in TransTech or was Cheetor ready to lead solo? From the little we know, it would have been g1 Optimus Prime taking over the Maximals, and g1 megatron taking over the bad guys.
