We heard that Hasbro had gone to DC first before Marvel & DC where not interested in working with a toy company.
Was there a reason for Hasbro going to DC? Who where making the Marvel Dc toys at the time?
I think a IDW comic crossover with the current comic line (maybe in a few years) in same way of Avengers crossover. But with a scene on Spiderman/Megatron - but Batman/Megatron.

If memory serves me, DC were already working with Mattel. While the MoTU comics had stopped, they were still handling the pack-in comics for them, so might not have wanted to irk their partner there.
Also a lot of DC's licenced toy comics were not great sellers, they were more often than not short mini-series.
Kenner were making the Super Powers line at the time and Marvel didn't have toys until Secret Wars - although that was with Mattel oddly enough.

I also imagine that, without Marvel, Sunbow wouldn't have done the cartoon and it would have been done by Filmation instead. Can you imagine that!?
(Also it would have been Superman or Batman helping Gears rescue Sparkplug in the comic. Or maybe Robin.)

Maybe not even Filmation, perhaps Hanna Barbera or DiC.
It would make for a nice what if special at some point.

It certainly would have been different.
*Autobots run in Filmation 'zigzag'*

And also what sort of names they would have had, and what the characters would have been like. Without Marvel's involvement you have someone else entirely developing the names, personalities...the entire fictional backdrop. You'c get the same toys, but not necessarily the same toyline.

Also why did Hasbro go to DC when they had Marvel do Gijoe in 82 so you'd expect them to go to Marvel right away. If any one has some undiscovered info on that reason ? Or Hasbro might not had liked something with Gijoe that Marvel had done - but they must have been looking around in 1983.

I imagine the fact that Marvel went to Mattel to do Secret Wars may have had some bearing on it, also it might be that they thought DC would be a better fit with what they were doing as Transformers was more fantastical than G.I. Joe.
