Right folks! My conference is over and I now have until Tuesday evening in Tokyo and Osaka before returning to the shattered remains of the United Kingdom. Phil has already recommended I look out for the Combiner Wars Blackjack repaints as Runamuck and Runabout (one of which was a Generations exclusive and may be hard as hell to find at any price) and the Powerglide and Groove figures as Dogfight and Override.
Any other suggestions? Any requests? I've been asking on Facebook for a while but I really should have come on here as well before now.

Some of the other early Transformers Adventures line (Is that what its called) like the repaints of animated Slag and Swoop maybe. I think they sold out on line, Phil probaly knows better than me.
If you have room (which hopefully you wont after a few days toy hunting) Grand Galvatron.

Andy K's right about the Swoop & Slag adventures toys, there's also a green Roadblock version of Scoop.

I was told to look out for "Mandarake" shops which are like CEX but for action figures. They are apparently very expensive, though. What do you recommend? -Nick

Ok, so! Yes, Mandarake is expensive, but they also have stores all over Tokyo, not just limited to the big two areas. Nakano Broadway is good, it has like 5 Mandarakes in there each with different items, and several floors full of stores you will want to check out.
Akihabara is obviously the main one that everyone has heard of, but because of that it is more expensive. You have to go in all the stores, things are on several floors and you have to just fumble your way along until you find something. They are also spread over several side streets on the electric town side. When I was there the vintage robots were mostly along the main street, but they take some hunting. For modern stuff, Yodobashi is the best place to go, the megastore is in Akihabara, but they also have another toy section in Shinjuku.
In Osaka, head to Sakai Suji for the best stores, use Jungle as your landmark there. The mandarake is a bit of a walk away from this, but it's also next to a super nice bookshop which is definitely worth checking out!

Is Sakaisuji an area, a street, a mall etc? Is this the place?According to google, Sakaisuji and Nipponbashi are FIVE MINUTES apart by metro. Here I was worrying I wouldn't be able to hit them both in one day! -Nick

It's a street, though again several stores in side streets off of it. That is indeed the place, Google hotel Hillarys Osaka and that is pretty much the starting point

Interested in G1 Japanese exclusives, but I realise most of them are probably too expensive. Also after boxed Blood [Bomb-Burst] and Phoenix [Cloudburst] to finish off my Japanese Pretenders. And check out Brandon's [Heroic-Decepticon] toy shop maps, might be shops you haven't found yet: heroicdecepticon.blogspot.co.uk/p/heroics-toy-shop-locator-guide.htmlHave fun!
