Got in to work today to discover this really sad news. Ollie Johnston died yesterday age 96. He was the last of what Walt Disney called his "nine old men".
As an (aspiring) animator these men always facinated me, they were Disney animation for half a century. Animation (and film for that matter) were barely a few decades old when they started. Johnston and Thomas were at Disney for from Snow Whiite right throught till the Rescuers in 78 then also worked on The Fox and Hound and were the mentors for the generation that went on to make The Little Mermaid throught to Lilo and Stich as well as for many at Pixar and Dreamworks etc. Really all the best bits of US Animation for me go back to these guys. I wont claim to know as much about any of them as I should (though thats going to change) but Im really feeling the loss.
Then again 96 is a damn fine innings, especially as he was able to continue doing what he loved till right near the end

Im really glad to be going to Disneyworld in a few weeks as it'll give me a chance to really learn some of the history. Its already spurred me on to get on with becoming an amimator. Johnston was only 23 when he worked on Snow White so at 26 I feel as though Ive wasted enough time. Ive already decided today to go on a character animation course at the company I work for, which in effect means Im off back to school for 3 months at a cost of more than three years tuition at university which is a bit of a scarey thought having just cleared the worst of my debts accumulated since uni.
Im really depressed.
