Not sure if this is something to do with TFNation or it's just a marvellous coincidence, but The Electric in Birmingham (the UK's oldest working cinema, apparently) is screening the 1986 Transformers on August 19th: www.theelectric.co.uk/programme.php?film=1531

I think Hasbro might have done that to tie in with the Tour there 18-20

Oh no, that will mess with the Friday night schedule!!

Meh. You can pay train fare and entry for this screening, or you can stay in the hotel and watch it for free with hundreds of other fans, a beer in your hand, and an introduction from one of the principal actors. Tough call.

Or you should watch Battle of the Rock Lords earlier in the evening. You won't need any other Transforming movie after that.
We should also have Paul Eiding introduce that as "I voiced a Gobot, but I am not in this movie".

Oh no, that will mess with the Friday night schedule!! Not mine it won't. I'll only be getting to the hotel at half-threeish. I have no intention of departing it again that soon. Besides, the bar prices probably won't be significantly cheaper anyway if Edinburgh's Indy cinema is anything to go by. Karl

Not anything to do with TFN or Hasbro, pure coincidence.
That being said, yep I will be staying at the hotel to watch with all of you and the rest of TFNation attendees!

I was disappointed when I asked and checked to realise Scorp wasn't in Rock Lords.

I'd really like to see the film in a proper cinema but don't imagine I'll abandon the con to do so, particularly not when there's an introduction to the film from one of the cast at the con.
It's a shame it wasn't on some other week as it would have made a good excuse for a meet-up.

This would have been cool, but just getting out of the convention area to where this cinema is (I don't actually know where it is) and back late at night would be so awkward.

It's between New Street Station and the Holiday Inn. If you looked from the HI balcony up at the station, there's a right turn right in front of it and this place is on that road.

I suspect the date isn't a coincidence, but I think they've miscalculated how much faffing about there is to get from the Hilton to there and possibly hadn't realised there'd be a screening at TFN itself.
If not for it needing a train journey I'd probably have slipped out of the con myself, I've seen the films with fans before (and even with Paul Eiding before!) so I think the experience of seeing it at an actual cinema would have trumped that. Especially as the Electric is quite nice based on my visit to see The 39 Steps there earlier this year (that's the film, I've no idea how many steps there are in the building).
If you are in the Brum are but not at the convention itself on the Friday it's well worth it though, beware though that as it's a small cinema tickets tend to vanish quickly for events.

Yeah, the cinema experience for me would have pulled me in. There's a world of difference between a convention hall of fans shouting every word of dialogue and an actual darkened cinema.
It's a nice cinema too, I saw 'Senna' there a few years back. But the hassle of travelling means I'll be staying put at TFN.

Having missed it in 86, I was lucky to see it at cinema at Botcon 2006 even if it was just the, then recently released DVD in which Hot Rod had been turned pink. And it is a different (better) experience from a convention hall viewing so its a shame it will clash.
If the Cinema is on the smaller side the organisers would have been better off screening it on the Thursday night, theres always a decent sized crowd around by then with no organised activities to occupy them.

And if anyone is left wondering if the timing is coincidence, they're showing MTMTE Elegant Chaos influence and general favourite film of the comic (has Roberts managed to go to a con without hearing the Power of Love in the last two years?) Back to the Future II on the Sunday, effectively bookending the con. Someone is clearly a bit of a fan.

The Electric have obviously had a lot of "I'd like to come..." emails as they've now added two extra screenings of the film, one on the Friday morning and one on the Sunday evening. So basically before and after the convention for most people (so if it was a coincidence to start with, it's not now): www.theelectric.co.uk/book-tickets.php?film=1531If there are sofa seats with a reasonable amount of space around them (so I can have my suitcase with me without annoying people) left tomorrow I'll probably book one for the Friday morning and go up to Birmingham early. Then on the evening see the panel, introduction and then head to the bar once the film starts. Or watch it twice in one day. Either way, result for me and one of life's little goals ticked off the list. Hooray! EDIT: Ah no, you need to book all the seats on each sofa. So it'll probably be at the front then, looks like there's good leg room there...

I was hoping for a Thursday night showing. Oh well.
Still fantastic opportunities for people who want to go and see it in the cinema.

I saw TF:TM in a cinema back in the day (almost 30 years) ago so would say a chance to see it in its native format is something to do if the circumstance presents itself. I would certainly leap at the chance to see it on the big screen again if I had the opportunity. I've seen it with a convention crowd and that is a very different experience.

Booked a ticket (at the front and at an end so there should be enough room for my bags), the early screening looks the be selling the weakest of the three but hopefully that'll change.
Con screenings are a lot of fun, but I must admit I've never hugely enjoyed the Rocky Horror style everyone joins in thing you get with films in that environment (which is a shame, as I love Rocky Horror but just wouldn't get anything out of seeing it with an audience). Obviously the crowd being up for the film and enjoying it adds to the experience, but pre-empting lines I'd rather hear the actors say has never been my personal thing.
