Was I the only one to make it to the end of the series!  Couldn't say, but I noped out at the end of the second episode - never to return. Which in fairness, isn't that bad a showing for Class. I stayed for about twenty minutes longer than I did with Lost. :-) Karl |

First episode watched. It's harmless enough; quite liked it. Exactly what I thought it would be: the BBC trying to recapture the attention of the kids who were into SJA and Tennant's Doctor in the new series' heyday.
Obviously viewing figures showed they weren't interested, but I am enough to keep going. Really it's no worse than most of the mid-card genre tripe on these days.

Ok, so the second episode is something of a tonal shift from the first. Every low budget 80s horror flick cliche thrown together in a plot that feels very familiar. I'm sure the second or third episode of the first season of Smallville did the same thing, and that was probably ripped off from something else. More Torchwood than SJA. I was disappointed to check afterwards and find this was written by Patrick Ness too. Not good.

This is where Ralph and I checked out. We hope that you report in that the young lad with the alien leg continues his trend of screaming and having blood splashed in his face for the remaining episodes.
The pair of us were genuinely nearly in tears over that particular trend which emerged, though not engaged enough to continue onwards.

Episode 3 features less facial splattering but more of the same really. Pinning people's hands to the floor with screwdrivers. The series is treading the path SJA and Torchwood did, but is totally confused about which it wants to be. So the reason why all this madness happens around the school is that there's a rift there, which is pretty much what Torchwood being in Cardiff was about, and we have a male lead from another planet who lives with an older female character also with otherworldly experience, and their friends, which is SJA. It has Torchwood's gore, SJA's teen angst, and then throws in curveballs like gay sex to show how trendy and socially progressive it is.
I think you could just about manage all that if the stories were good, but eps 2 and 3 feel like rejected Who scripts. Miss Quill is quite an interesting character, but the rest are just flat. Clearly this is aimed at very late teens/early twenties - the BBC3 audience they were trying to capture when it went online - but I think in trying to make it overtly edgy it's missed the charm that series like Buffy had.

Ep 4 is more about progressing the character relationships than it is fighting this week's alien threat, which appears to be carnivorous petals. The Shadowkin would make a good Who villain. Very Discovery style Klingon. Misjudged comedy though, like the king of the Shadowkin being straddled by the queen, but being unable to 'perform' because the girl who shares his heart is having sex at the same time and it puts him off. Err...
Oh this is the first half of a two parter. Nice climax, actually makes me want to watch part five.

Well, episode 5 is certainly the second half of episode 4. Half the plot is lifted from Lord of the Rings, which is even acknowledged in the script. It felt like some epic conclusion to half a heart girl's story, but after only four episodes the viewer hasn't had enough time to build a relationship to care.
I still can't quite get my head round this. All the ingredients say it should be a great show, but it doesn't work. It also doesn't feel like Patrick Ness's writing to me, which I can only put down to either him writing formula TV for the first time, or interference from the spectre of the executive producer. It certainly feels more like Moffat's style than anything else.
I think if they'd taken out the sex, gore and random swearing that this would have worked quite well on CBBC, but you can't take SJA and put sex in it and expect it to work. Everything jars too much. Even the theme music doesn't fit the titles.

Nope. In eps 4/5 he just becomes the emotional support for half a heart girl. Lots of gurning and 'I'm protecting you because I'm the male but I'm not going to admit I love you and that actually you're far more powerful than I am' nonsense.
There is also an attempt to answer the question of how all these things are happening around the school and no one has noticed - the Head is replaced by a mysterious figure who seems to be from something like Torchwood but will probably turn out to be a threat in her own right. She's doing cover ups and refers to the governors of the school like they're some alien cabal orchestrating things.

The more you watch though, the more it becomes apparently it has literally nothing to do with Doctor Who. That's my biggest problem with it!! If it was marketed as original it might have been better received!

I don't think that's its problem; it needs its own identity so it can stand on its own feet. The problem is it doesn't know what that identity should be. You're right though - the Doctor Who connection does hamper it because the expectation is there that it'll fit more neatly into that world. Thinking about it, Capaldi being in the first episode is probably why it works - even though when he did show up my immediate reaction was, why do we need him? they're supposed to be able to solve this on their own.

The pitch for episode six must have been Sapphire and Steel Adventure Six meets The Breakfast Club. That pretty much covers it. Probably one of the better episodes so far, but the most exciting part was the last minute, which sets up what might actually be a genuinely good next episode - that being what Quill did while the kids are trapped in the detention room.
Leg boy gets no splatter, but his range of facial gurning to express emotion is now getting ridiculous.

After episode 8 you must read the 3 novels for the full complete Class experience in all media. You may be the first person alive to achieve this. You cannot leave the mission partially completed.

The one I read had large print and chapters as short as a third of a page. It took only a couple of hours to get through.
You cannot exit the Class mission before completion of the whole canon! THE HUB DEMANDS IT!!!

From that moment on you were destined to marathon it all. The 8 TV episodes. The 3 novels. All of it.
Don't think you can chicken out of the novels for if you try to do so my esteemed colleague Mr Ayres has addresses on file...

Episode 7 is actually half decent. Probably because the kids aren't in it. It's all about Quill and what she's doing while episode 6 is happening and has a proper Doctor Who type plot. It's almost disappointing to think this is what the series could have been like.
