Frank Miller's cinematic take on the Will Eisner comic.
I can't help but hear too much of Miller in the narration and not enough of Eisner. That being said it looks pretty cool.

Pretty much the Internets is united in thinking that there is too much FRANK MILLER in will eisner's THE SPIRIT.

Please forgive my ignorance as I am not very clued up when it comes Frank Miller comics but is The Spirit connected to Sin City because from my perspective the film styles look similar.

Nope. The only connection being Frank Miller and the style it's being filmed in. The Spirit was a comic published in newspapers in 1940 by Will Eisner. Legendary in comic circles as being something of a blueprint to how to tell stories.

I just don't see the point of doing it Sin City style, which was so stylised and with none of the backgrounds obviously there, why do any of it live action? Why not all in animation? That sort of hybrid style just looks a bit...crap...in my eyes. The Spirit trailer looks so close to animation, what is the point of having an actor in it? When his tie looks animated and that draws my attention more than anything else...eh?
I just don't get it.

I'm not sure that this is doing much for me to be honest. The voice-over has far too much of a Frank Miller flavour to me, which doesn't really say "The Spirit" to me.
I do agree that it feels like it wants to be an animated movie, looking at it.
(The reason it isn't an animated film is simple mind you. It would be box-office suicide. There is still a great deal of audience snobishness in the western world, a view that animation is only for children. So going down the animated route would doom the film out of the gate. For some reason this mindset only applies to animation that doesn't look like live-action mind you. So if you make your animated sequences look as much like life as possible you can get away with it.) .
