Forgive another DW themed thread, but this needs a poll.
How are you going to buy the new Power Of The Daleks animation?

DVD. I might have been tempted to double dip if I'd have been able to get episode 1 to watch live on Saturday but I'll be at a wedding so ....

The animation looks horrific. I don't think I can tolorate such low quality animation in this day and age. I mean, it's giving Combiner Wars a run for it's money.

I can't judge the animation until it's actually available to view. I am looking forward to it.

Just the DVD for me. There's not too long a wait between the digital and physical releases.

Just the DVD for me. There's not too long a wait between the digital and physical releases. Yeah same. Its madness to do both, especially as the animation looks very cheap from the trailer!!!

DVD for collection completion. File downloads are too intangible for me and exciting though this is, it isn't a proper missing story release.

Or maybe if I would have had to wait more than what, 2 weeks? If I bought the downloads I probably wouldn't watch it in that time anyway.

But the missing episodes no longer exist to buy anyway!!!

That's what Blueshift and I are saying.
If they did, and this was a proper story release, I'd by it as download, DVD, vinyl, 8-Track, wax cylinder, whatever you like. But it isn't, so it's not as appetising. To me an animation ranks lower than a good recon, and I've already got the Loose Cannon and previous BBC versions. I'm more excited about the extras.

Ah ha, but this includes a recon! Ralph prefers recons anyway. I will be surprised if it's not the MP3CD one imported on to the release but that would be fine as I missed that at the time and it goes for funny money.
Animation is an additional viewing option for me, not a default, though I think it is good to have it for it draws in folk who won't watch a recon or listen to the audio soundtrack (for understandable reasons). If this is a way for more folk to experience what for me is a fantastic story then that is great and also allows for the voices of folk who made the original episodes to be recorded in making-of docs/commentaries while they are still with us.
Heck, even if the animation is poo I hope this does well. You never know, could give a whole new lease of life to the era of 'missing' Doctor Who!
It still boggles my mind how Mark Ayres has got stereo and 5.1 sound options out of tinny soundtracks literally taped off of TV sets!

Yeah, but that's why it's a DVD purchase for me, rather than a day one download so I can get to watch it two weeks earlier
I still wish they could animate their recons with anything that isn't cheap flash 'lets just wobble the images bigger and smaller instead of animating it'
(yes I know it's not out yet but the trailer doesn't fill me with hope)

The problem is that animation is expensive and to justify the type of budget/rendering time required for higher quality material the end product would need to sell a certain amount of units which may be beyond projects of this nature. However it's dressed up, 50 year old telly isn't going to sell beyond a certain (lower) amount than modern stuff. It actually amazes me there is even enough money put up for this to animate 6 episodes!
The other problem faced with these types of projects is that the direction style and look of it will always be hindered by it emulating the missing pictures. We forget sometimes how static tv of that time is. Animation tends to move much more quickly so there's always going to be a limit to how good animation based off of the style of 50 year old telly (which is must fit to the soundtrack of) no matter how well it's done. There's no way to win, really. Recall how the more dynamic inter-cutting of the Reign of Terror animated episodes (very differently staged to the surrounding live action episode) went down like a lead balloon with the audience.

Yeah, but until recently, Doctor Who was the hottest scifi property in the world (moffat dragging his feet soooooo badly and going a year plus between short seasons kinda let it cool down pretty hard). If it was just trying to sell there, I'd agree that there probable wouldn't be a market. But until they let it cool, they had the entire world they could have sold it too. If they had had this out for the 50th, with even halfway decent animation, the sales stateside alone would have justified it.

It's getting both a TV airing and some cinema showings in the US as BBC America put some cash into the animation costs.

Would now be a bad time to mention the steelbook version? Having said that I'm leaning towards just the DVD again.
