Subscription copy dropped through the mailbox this morning. Some spoilers ahead.
First off the cover art is by Gary (The Filth, Dan Dare) Erskine with colour by Chris (Captain Marvel Vol#4) Sotomayer. It depicts Megatron attacking Bumblebee with a lightning bolt arcing down the page in the background. It's flat and disappointing. Both of them are capable of so much more.
Twilight's Last Gleaming Part Three. Fabio Makoto Ono joins us for art duties with this installment and it's the best of the three parter so far. He's got a handle on the models for the Movie but simplifies them just enough to make them work on the printed page. Ably assisted by Ryan Button on colours.
The separate strands of the story advance and it becomes apparent that the Decepticons have anticipated every move of the Autobots and are setting them up for a final and brutal showdown. The Autobots on the moon do their level best against Starscream before heading towards Earth. Meanwhile Bumblebee is forced into action against Megatron outside the cryogenics bay containing Optimus Prime. Frenzy makes an appearance as he attacks Mikaela (and he gets some dialogue - sadly it's in english. A nicer touch would have been to use the Cybertronian font from the film and then translate it in a text box). The issue comes to a conclusion with Ironhide and Ratchet arriving smack in the middle of a trap orchestrated by Bonecrusher. The story moves along at a good clip and engages the attention with great art and colours.
One point that annoys me though - the lettering. Why use the same mechanical font for human dialogue. It's not a good touch and I find it distracting.
As usual we have more installments of The Gathering and The Movie Prequel. Which having taken the time to read them for once do read a lot better in the smaller chunks especially The Gathering.
The how-to-draw feature for once pays lip service on how to actually draw rather than the previous versions. We have a feature on the Autobots from the new Animated show and they are the reverse side of the poster with the cover art for the issue.
There's some readers drawings and letters.
Another solid issue.
