I will not spoil it online but in discussing Split with Andu, I revealed the final astonishing twist. He looked a broken man.

1. The Lego Batman Movie (best DC movie since the Dark Knight trilogy - I shed tears of laughter at certain points) 2. Assassin's Creed

I attended a screening of the restored print of Casablanca. At last, Assasin's Creed is no longer film of the year!

Of course, technically, Assassins Creed was released in the US in December 2016, so it's no more a 2017 film than Casablanca is. Techincally.

We've always went by the year it was in UK cinemas here. So yes, Assasin's Creed was made in 2016 but released here in 2017 so to my great sadness it is in the 2017 film thread.

I had hoped for fun silly tosh from The Great Wall but right from the off it was the most banal, dull, boring and insipid film I have seen in a long time. Sigh.

Sigh. -Ralph It's by the director of 'Hero' and 'House of Flying Daggers', which I absolutely adore, but the reviewers all seem quick to say "Nothing like 'Hero' and 'House of Flying Daggers' - fans of these should stay away". So I'm staying away. Martin

The Founder was ok, though it had a very irritating overly bouncy score which sucked the drama out of every scene. Sadly, Assassin's Creed is better.

Watched Hidden Figures. At the start it looked like it was going to a stinker with twee music but it got much better as it went on and I got quite caught up in it. Enjoyable. As an aside, amongst the good performances I was shocked that Kevin Costner has learned how to act again.
Followed straight after with John Wick Chapter 2. My goodness, what violence! Just what I was in the mood for but jings I was audibly and loudly wincing and gasping (I could not help myself) through most of it as many died in multiple deadly bone crunching ways, which probably breaks the Cinema Code of Conduct. The bit with the pencil...
Both were better than Assassin's Creed.

1. Love and Friendship 2. La-La Land enjoyed this a lot more than I expected; thought I would find it irksome based on everything I'd read, but instead found it very pleasant and fun

Watched Moonlight. Very nicely lit but just like the film it feels like a tonal pairing with (Boyhood) I found it to be dull as ditch water. Immensely boring. I am aware of the semi-autobiographical nature of the material so was inclined to want to appreciate it but it just sat on the screen like a lifeless sponge of nothing.

1. Logan 2. The Lego Batman Movie 3. Kong: Skull Island (better than Peter Jackson's attempt - and there's a scene at the end of the end credits that's worth waiting around for) 4. Assassin's Creed

Hmmm lets see if I can remember what Ive seen
John wick 2 - Maybe not as good as the first one but this is how to make a sequel. I was worried it would take the Taken route and have some one kill his dog again, but thankfully not.
Logan - Yes!
Hidden Figures - Absolutely nothing shocking happens, there are no twists and turns and yet its a joy to watch.
Lego Batman - I was dubious about following up the Lego Movie with a Batman spin off, but it works.
Lion
Why him
Is that it? I need to see more films.

Some bad audience behaviour during GET OUT. I was in the front row, and two seats along to my right was a lass. Literally as soon as the film started, she pulled out her phone and tapped away at it. This continued all the way through the film. Whenever there was a loud bang on the screen, she would jump out of her seat, scream, and start giggling away to her mate beside me and some chat would ensue before she went back to her phone. Tap tap tap, white screen, white screen, scream, chat chat chat, tap tap tap. As soon as the end credits started, the phone finally went away.
WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU PAY TO WATCH A FILM AND THEN STAY ON YOUR PHONE THE ENTIRE FUCKING TIME???
GET OUT!

Beauty and the Beast. Well that was an odd experience. The original is quite simply close to a perfect film and this is an at times shot for shot, line for line, song for song remake so it can't be bad but its not being original.
It does its best to distinguish itself (while trying as hard as possible not too) by filling in, clarifying or correcting some plot holes, such as making the bookshop a library and making more sense of the beasts age and timeline asnd explaining how the horse knew where the beasts castle was when he took Belle.
While all of these are legitimate issues with the original they never spoilt it and here they feel like unwanted exposition and helps to add a whopping 43 minutes to the run time of a film that tells exactly the same story.
In fairness they also add a little back story to the Beast and Belle. It help Beast a bit. It doesnt do much for Belle and adds a weird extra magic thing that comes out of nowhere and makes little sense.
They also give the castles servants extra screen time, back story and add a few extras. The Harpsicord is great playing his own soundtrack throughout. This is probably the only area that the film is arguably better than the original.
Gaston and Josh Gadd getting a bit more story too, Gadds character is probably the biggest character change between the films and not for the gay thing.
And there are new songs, while pretty good some of them feel like they belong to Les Mis more than B&B. The old songs do mostly sound fantastic with some great choreography. Apart from the title song which for all but a few seconds is visually a mess.
Oh and Mrs Potts new accent is by far the worst part of the film it grates and makes me miss Angela Lansbery so so much.
Okay thats more than any one should be writing about Beauty and the Beast, but its a confusingthing to have watched.

For a movie that exists only to shoehorn a pointless Godzilla vs King Kong film, Kong: Skull Island was way better than it had any right to be.
The plot is very thin, but you know what? It doesn't need to be any more complex than it is. Sometimes a simple plot works, and I think that can be lost on a lot of people now a days. The characters for the most part are pretty bland (except John C Reilly), which is sad because this movie is full of amazingly talented character actors (John Goodman, Sam Jackson, Tom Hiddleton). But even though they were bland, I didn't really find them boring?
But the star of it are the effects and cinematography. This director knows how to create iconic and memorable images. And lord I wish he was doing Transformers instead of Bay.
All in all, when GZvKK was announced, I was dreading this movie. It just seemed superfluous and pointless, and reeked of "combined universe" bandwagon jumping. Is it a Good movie? Not really. See Hidden Figures for a Good movie. But it's a FUN movie. In a lot of ways it feels more like a successor to the Popcorn Blockbusters of the 90s like Jurassic Park and Twister, than contemporary movies like Godzilla and Jurassic World do.
