I still don't get how one grid reference can be a move, I mean, how do you know what moved? Or is it like that only one piece could move to that place, so you're supposed to know?

I still don't get how one grid reference can be a move, I mean, how do you know what moved? Or is it like that only one piece could move to that place, so you're supposed to know? Yes, it's this. When you get used to it it's actually really simple. You give the piece and then the destination square. B for Bishop, K for King, N for Knight etc. Pawns don't get a 'P', so for a pawn you just state the destination square. If there has been a capture or a check, then that is given before the destination square. Bxc4 would be bishop (from where ever it is) takes on c4.

I'm trying to play through the moves on a board but I can't make sense of it. Shockers, you moved e5 early on then a couple of moves later said pawn e5? But the pawn was already on e5? And how did the bishop take a pawn on c5 when the bishop was on c5?

I need to work this out. Standby.

Ok. Not so simple after all... I'm sorry, Doc', I've made a bit of an arse of it here. I've put a second 'e5' instead of 'd5', and my bishop was taking your pawn on f5, I put c5 by mistake. I... I think I got over excited. Or Phil's sabotaging the game. Do you want to start again The Doctor? And I'll try to pull myself together? We were ok up until my third move. So: 1. pawn f4 - pawn e5 2. pawn f5 - bishop c5 3. pawn c3 -

Well, I've had trouble with this. I thought I had one on Chess.com, but every now and then it looses your position. And I've never really played chess online. I like to press the flesh with wood.

What's happening here? Have you started again? Someone make a move!
